ULANZ – Australian Universities

ULANZ is now the University Libraries of Australia and New Zealand, and reciprocal borrowing privileges have been extended to include many Australian Universities. We are currently working on updating the Library webpages and the wiki, but some of you may have already noticed that the online registration form lists the participating New Zealand and Australian Universities under two separate drop-down menus.

Creating or updating ULANZ records

We are beginning to see few ULANZ borrowers at the Information Desks seeking to have a library record set up or renewed for 2013. In addition to the notes on the wiki, you might find the following pointers helpful…

1. Check that the borrower’s institutional ID card is valid for 2013 or beyond. Some cards may not have any date on them at all but can be accepted in good faith. In all cases the ULANZ record expiry date will be 28 February 2014.

2. Search by borrower name for any other record they may have on Horizon.

3. If the borrower does not appear to have a record on Horizon, then the normal procedure for setting up a ULANZ record applies

4. If another record is found, and the barcode matches that on the borrower’s card:
Check there are no unpaid library charges
Renew the record in the usual way via the ULANZ icon

4. If another record is found, and the barcode does not match:
Check there are no unpaid library charges
Ensure that any items issued have been checked in, then
Set up the new record via the ULANZ icon, and tick the box for ‘other record on Horizon’ on the online form.

The Central Library staff responsible for checking the ULANZ load on Horizon will ‘unapprove’ or ‘delete’ any pre-existing record with a different barcode.

Central Library – IT workroom assistants

Message received from Averill Duncan (Senior IT Workrooms Consultant):

“From this Friday (7th September) we will close the office at 5pm on Fridays rather than the previously advertised time of 6pm. The signs will be changed and web pages updated to reflect this.

We are not able to roster anyone on duty for either afternoon shift on Saturday and Sunday (this weekend only). We apologise for this.”

IT Workroom Assistance

“There will be no IT Workroom assistant working out of the Central Library workroom consultants’ office, level 2, on Saturday (26th May) 1pm until 4pm. There will be a sign posted on the door to this area.

We will ensure the printers have full paper trays at close of day today and there will be someone on duty on Sunday afternoon.

Printer paper is stored now in the area outside of the workrooms office, south west corner, level 2 (the paper used to be in cupboards at the back of level 2).

Over Queen’s Birthday weekend we will have a workroom assistant on duty Saturday and Sunday but on the Monday.

Study break, 5 June – 8 June, the evening workroom assistant will be on duty as usual and following that period there will be no workroom help out of hours until semester two begins.”

IT workroom assistants – Extended hours, Central Library

Workroom Assistants can provide help as follows:

General support and guidance relating to software packages on the student computers (but they do not help with specific assignment problems – these students are referred back to their lecturer). In the main the packages are Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email and web browser.

First level analysis of hardware problems including placing workstations out of order

Checking printers are filled with paper during their shift and consumables checked as well as monitoring all the workroom print queues remotely. And they can deal with general printer problems.

Supervision tasks – that is, ensuring the computer areas are functioning quietly and in an orderly way.

During their shift they are entitled to a short break and this is indicated by a ‘back at …’ sign.

They can log any service request into SDE so even if they cannot immediately solve the problem they can capture & record the details and the incident will be attended to on the next business day.

No, they cannot do password changes.

The contact telephone number is 4060

And lastly, they finish for the term on Friday and start again on Monday 23 April.
