UC Library’s ‘e-book of the year’ award goes to….

Given that Proquest Central offers us some fairly detailed e-book use & user data and we have quite a few titles on that platform the following totals may be of interest to some.

I thought I’d add number of unique users for selected titles as well as that info seems kind of important.

Proquest is probably stronger on social science and arts titles, so not much going for Engineering here. Subject categories are Proquest generated so may appear to be weird.

NZ copyright term extension proposal. Overview article on Newsroom

Kia ora koutou,

The following Newsroom.co.nz article may be of wider interest, or at least worth knowing about.

‘Creatives fear ‘uncharted territory’ as copyright extension fast-tracked’.
From the same piece: “However, the free trade agreement with the EU agreed to last week contains the same requirement for New Zealand to extend its copyright term, but requires the changes to be made just four years after the deal enters into force.”

It was going to be a 15 year transition period.

‘Top trends in academic libraries’ – latest ACRL report

This Academic and College Research Library sector overview mostly relates to the U.S. environment but there should be something in there of interest to most people.
Keenious gets a shout out and with 97 references to follow up on the fun reading never really needs to stop.

But watch the Wicked Bible video posting first. It’s a lot cooler.

Research Planning and Review Committee, 2. (2022). Top trends in academic libraries: A review of the trends and issues. College & Research Libraries News, 83(6), 243.

Abstract
This article summarizes trending topics in academic librarianship from the past two years–a time of tremendous upheaval and change, including a global pandemic, difficult reflections concerning racial justice, and war between nation states. Rapid changes and uncertainty from these events have created a significant amount of shifts to academic libraries, higher education, and society in general. Such shifts have yielded new perspectives and innovations in how librarians approach delivering services, supporting student success, managing staff and physical spaces, embracing new technology, and managing data. This report attempts to provide a snapshot of developments worth noting

‘Building a Regional Community of Digital Humanities Practice: Yes We Can!’

Rachel Esson, Te Pouhuaki National Librarian of New Zealand, will give a keynote address the conference of the Australasian Association for Digital Humanities, this afternoon, Tuesday 23rd November at 2pm (NZT),

Her talk, ‘Building a Regional Community of DH Practice: Yes We Can!’ proposes that building on shared values will ‘grow a strong community of practice in our region between our various sectors.’ In this context, she will explore ‘the challenges and opportunities for digital humanities in the context of the Covid-19 crisis, share how National Library has contributed to digital humanities in the past and how that role could be expanded in the future, and will look ahead to a possible future of greater regional cross-sector collaboration.’

DHA2021 Creating Communities Ka Renarena Te Taukaea is a free, virtual event.

4,397 ‘lock down’ movies via eTV

Having just reminded an academic about our eTV access to well over 4000 movies I thought it might be worth sharing the location of this mostly excellent educational resource

Once inside it’s not very intuitive to move around, but by using the search ‘cog’ icon to the right of the search box, then – Categories – Movies – then Search – the lockdown ‘mother lode’ can be revealed.
Or maybe, more directly, this link may work once logged on, or maybe not.

Happy educational viewing to all!

UC student seeks current student/recent grad. of VUW’s MIS programme

Kia ora colleagues,
I’ve been approached by a 3rd year BA student asking about post-grad NZ library quals and they seem particularly interested in talking to someone enrolled in, or recently graduated from, Victoria’s MIS library programme.
My own library study was, well… let’s just say, a wee while ago.
If anyone is keen to help out please let me know and I’ll put you in contact.
