‘Dictionary of Canterbury Biography’ transcription project invitation

This is a two-for-one deal really, and some of you may have already seen it promoted via a UC Library Facebook post.

1. You help out a student with her 300 level internship.

2. You contribute to a joint public history project, between Canterbury museum and University of Canterbury.

Blurb from the project page, linked above follows:
‘If you choose to take part in this study, you will be asked to read one or more historical documents and identify and transcribe names. This task should take no longer than 5-10 minutes, but you may spend as much time on it as you wish. Then you will be asked to complete a short survey, which should take about 10 minutes.’

Fancy a PD top up? ‘Digital Literacies ANZ webinar’ Tues, 15/8 RM210 at 2

Some may be able to get to this, either as a group thing in PJH 210, or just individually. Others may be curious enough to try and find out if it’s being recorded.

Either way I’ve booked 210 with the intention of having us logged in for anyone keen to come along.

Of course on any given day the tech may decide to fail, so be wary of trudging across campus just for this!

All I know is below 🙂

Dear all,

Just a reminder about the next Digital Literacies ANZ webinar on Tuesday 15 August:

OPEN LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS FOR DEVELOPING DIGITAL LITERACY SKILLS.

Last year the University of Sydney Library won grant funding to create two Open Learning Environments (OLEs) for undergraduate students to develop their digital literacy skills. The OLEs will focus on choosing good information and being able to find it, wherever that may be. We want to empower our students to be truthseekers, rather than passive consumers of information and opinions. The two 0-credit point OLEs will be entirely online, but produced so that the materials could be pulled out and repackaged in other formats, including face to face, for use in other subjects. Michelle Harrison, who is leading the development team, will outline the approach taken and progress so far.

Facilitator: Michelle Harrison, Manager Information and Research Skills, Library, University of Sydney
Date: Tuesday 15th August
Time: 12:00-1:00pm (AEST) (UTC +10)
Join the webinar at: https://zoom.us/j/448307683

Cheers,

Michael

Visitor from City Libraries, Anna Sun. July 24th & 31st

Next Monday and the one after that we have Anna Sun with us from Upper Riccarton library as an Aoraki PURR library scheme visitor.

Currently working as a library assistant Anna is keen to get an insight into how some things work here at UC Libraries, which is just the sort of visit PURR is set up for.

Thanks to the following volunteers, who will spend time with Anna to focus on some of her expressed areas of interest; Kiera, Lyn and Brian.

On a City Libraries theme some of you will be aware that a brand new library opens this weekend, July 22nd Ōrauwhata in Bishopdale.

NZ non-fiction e-book trial. July 17th – August 25th.

Kia ora koutou,

Please note that we currently have access to the full range of Bridget Williams Books via the database trial page.

There’s an interesting mixture of older publications and newer material. Much of the newer stuff is in ‘short’ format, described by BWB as ‘short books on big topics’.

As always with any trial it would be great to get feedback from library staff and the wider UC community about the platform as well as the title list. There is a revamped evaluation form link on the trials page for that purpose.

Enjoy!
