We have had a number of problems recently with Meebo. One suggestion from Meebo is to renew the source code used by your browser. It certainly helped for me. The suggestion was to first clear your browser’s cache (see the Meebo link at the end of this note if you need help), connect to the meebo home page i.e. http://meebo.com and holding the control key, press F5.
Free internet quota for students
Those of you who get asked by students about internet costs may be interested in the following news item from ICTS who will provide 200MB free internet traffic per student per semester. This doesn’t apply to staff.
The latest Blackboard newsletter from Gregor Ronald contained this snippet (my emphasis):
The Library may move their scanned restricted loan PDF files to another location during S1 2008; if you have direct URLs to any of these they will need to be edited. If you just link to your Subject page, no change will be required. For advice, please contact your Subject Librarian.
If you are approached by anybody about this, could you please just get their contact details and forward them to me. You can then reassure them that nothing will happen without me contacting them first.
If you have a “librc” training login please check it the day before you need it. If there are any problems, check with Peter or Donna. If a password needs to be reset, it takes between 10 minutes and an hour to become active.
If you intend to use a laptop that has not been connected to the network in the last few days, then, at least the day before, please plug it in to the network and leave it turned on for 2 – 3 hours. Reboot it and repeat the process. This should ensure all sets of upgrades are downloaded and installed thereby avoiding prompts during your teaching (there have been 26 updates over summer).
If you have a training room that has not been in regular use over summer, then, before the first training session, it would pay to turn the PCs on about an hour beforehand as some of these may also download updates with slower performance for a while after first being turned on. They don’t need to be logged in – just turned on.
A reminder that if you need Internet Enabler (e.g. you have used your staff login) it is in K:\library_IT\Applications\IEnabler.
We have been reminded that, because of our subscription to Web of Knowledge, we automatically have access to EndnoteWeb (i.e. http://www.myendnoteweb.com)
Users will have to register – but If you are already registered in the Web of Knowledge, you do not have to register for EndNote Web. Login using the same login credentials.
