Central Library and Learning Hub access restrictions and summer 2012-2013 closure

Please find below the latest information relating to the remediation project in the James Hight Building.

Remediation and betterment work is taking place on a number of levels of James Hight, which has affected access to some areas of the Central Library and Learning Hub. This will continue over the coming months and into 2013, including a complete closure over the summer period, details of which are below.

Library staff understand this will impact upon staff and students’ research and study needs, and are making every effort to ensure access to resources will be maintained through the request and retrievals system and relocation of High Demand collections.

While these projected dates are accurate at this time, the nature of the work being undertaken means some may be subject to change.

Level 11 – currently closed, re-opening Monday 11 JuneThe Library is expecting level 11 to be handed back by Monday 11 June at the latest, at which time public access will resume. Although the betterment work has not yet been completed on this level, the carpet has been laid and the shelving is being installed, which will allow books to be moved back in the coming weeks.

Level 10 – currently closed, re-opening late June
The books from level 10 will be moved down to level 7 as soon as the level 11 books have been returned from level 7. For a short period of time access to levels 9, 10 and 11 may be restricted to Library staff only.

Level 9 – currently open, closing Monday 7 MayLevel 9 will be closed to public access from Monday 7 May, however, Library staff will have daily access to retrieve requests. If you wish to browse the level 9 shelves, please do so before Monday 7 May.

Level 8 – currently open, restricted access from late JulyWhen level 10 is handed back to the Library, level 8 will become restricted access. This is likely to be sometime in late July.

This process of having two of the levels of the Central Library restricted will continue until the end of the academic year.

Closure of the Central Library and Learning Hub over the summer period (mid-November 2012 – mid-February 2013)The Central Library and Learning Hub will close for the summer at the end of the 2012 academic year to allow contractors to complete the James Hight remediation and improvement work. This work should be finished in time for the library to reopen by the start of the 2013 academic year.

UC staff and students will be reminded to borrow any items they may need over summer prior to the closure. However, Library staff will also be able to retrieve items requested throughout the closure. The decision to move any of the Central collection to other libraries has not been made. This decision will be made in conjunction with Liaison Librarians, academic staff and research students to ensure that adequate access to Library resources for both research and summer school courses is maintained.

Fines and lost books

Fines on overdue material have been back in operation since the 23rd January 2012. Work has been ongoing to review lost books and fines prior to this with the following decisions now made;

All fines prior to 23/1/2012 have been waived and removed from the user records. The information is still retained in the users history. Fines that are generated after the 23/1/2012 still stand and need to be paid.

A number of users still have items out that went to lost prior the 23/1/2012. We are in the process of contacting them to see if the items are lost due to EQ damage and if not to ask for them to be returned. If items are returned then the associated fines should be waived.

The list of items which have been removed from borrowers records as a result of the earthquake (damaged or still within red zone areas) will or have been given to the Liaison librarian team who then make the decision to recommend the purchase of a replacement copy. The majority of borrowers being contacted by staff do have the books, so the return is likely. If items in this category are not returned then the borrower will be charged for the item.

Any questions please ask.

EPS Library

As of Monday 5th March Levels 2 and 3 of the EPS Library will re-open providing access to the Engineering and Physical Sciences Collections along with silent study space, bookable discussion rooms and additional group space. We will stop doing retrievals although students can still place requests as required.

The Library looks great and we are all delighted so please do come and have a look.

Many thanks
Coral

High Demand Collection

Just to confirm that in general all material going onto High Demand should be kept at the library it belongs to with the student going to that library to borrow the item. The only exception to this is when an item is located on the other Campus e.g. Education requesting a Central item.

Items currently on High Demand but at the wrong location are in the process of being returned to their home library, still remaining in the High Demand Collection.
Many thanks

EPS Library Re-opens

On Monday the 20th February the EPS Library will reopen with access to Level 1 in the first instance. This will provide access to the serials and High Demand collections, study scapes, pc’s, printing and photocopying and Information Desk Services.

The High Demand material will be moved from Central Library on Monday morning and will be available from about 9am at EPS. A retrieval service for books on level 2 and 3 will operate throughout the day.
