EPS is open!

Yes, we are actually open from today, Tuesday 2 March. We are still experiencing some disruption as minor work is finished but we are open to the public. Restricted Loans will be relocated this morning. Staff telephone extensions are still being finalised and our workroom areas are not quite organised, but we are contactable by email or on the Service Desk phone – extension 6155. We look forward to seeing you in our “new” Library space!
Thanks, Dawn

EPS still not open…

EPS Library remains closed until further notice while awaiting commercial cleaning and final finishing of minor work. Cleaning was to take place on Friday but this has not eventuated and the result is that we cannot have students in the building while it is in its current state. EPS staff are operating from PSL and also from Library on Location in the Mushroom foyer. We have had to leave our Restricted Loans collections in PSL even though PAC locations have been updated. This will no doubt be confusing for students, but please offer our apologies and re-direct them to PSL in the meantime. This is especially frustrating for the several hundred ENGR 101 students who received their first assignment on Friday. Information and resources can be found on LEARN, the Engineering Intermediate Subject Guide and Topic Guides, and in Restricted Loans.

To contact us today, it may be best to try the PSL workroom number first – 7593. We will obviously be in a state of flux for a little while yet but will update you on developments.

Thanks, Dawn

Update on Eng/PSL Merger

As you may know, refurbishments to the EL building have been delayed and final hand-over is now expected to be the 22nd February. Our new mobile shelving is also delayed, and this will be installed end March/early April. These two delays have meant adjustments to what will be relocated and when.

We will keep all print journals (from EL and PSL) on Level 2 of PSL until the mobile shelving is ready. This means that all EL journals will be relocated to temporary stack in PSL next week (from the 16th February onwards).

PSL monographs, computers, the High Demand and Reference collections, along with relevant furniture and other equipment will be relocated during the week 22nd – 26th February. This is, of course, DURING the first week of term for Eng/Physical Science students and will be disruptive. However there is no alternative other than to have both libraries closed during the first week of term.

The new staffing structure for the EPS Library came into effect today and the new team is now delivering services from PSL, although some of us are still based in EL. We are starting to see how attractive our new spaces will be, but there still seems to be a frightening amount to be done in the next two weeks. We are hugely grateful for the hands-on help we have received from colleagues all around the Library during our many stock moves over the summer. At last count, we have carried out 22 individual stock moves mostly within EL, as we keep one step ahead of the builders, the carpet-layers, the painters, the welders and the electricians! We know that the merger has also resulted in a great deal of flow-on work for colleagues in other parts of the Library and we appreciate everybody’s ongoing support. We hope that, very soon, you will be able to visit and see the improvements for yourself.

New name for merged Eng/PSL Library

Hi all
It’s official – the new name for the merged Eng/PSL Library will be:

“EPS
The Engineering and Physical Sciences Library”

Confirmation of approval for the new name has just been received from the College of Science. This follows approval already received from the College of Engineering.

Progress on the refurbishment programme itself is running slightly behind time so its likely that “EPS” will not be open until late February/early March. Will keep you posted on this.

Access to the Engineering Library

The City Council have now issued a “Certificate for Public Use” for the Engineering Library building. This means that specific staff have approval to be in the building while construction occurs and this is limited to the EL team and some of the PSL team, but does not include any Library staff outside EL & PSL. Therefore, if anyone is wanting to visit EL or gain access to the building for any reason, please contact me in the first instance. Many thanks, Dawn.
