ENGR 101 time again

Kia Ora Everyone,
Just as a FYI the ENGR 101 assignment has just been released.  We will present the lecture tomorrow, but today it is live.  The topic is again Agricultural green house gases and an engineering solution.  The referencing style is APA and they are NOT to use ChatGPT.  There are over 1100 students…

Good luck to everyone!

ENGR 101 time again

Kia Ora everyone,

Well it is that time of year again when the vast bunch of brand new engineers embark on their very first assignment as part of the Faculty of Engineering.

The first assignment will be released this week.  It is due on Friday 18th March.

The Topic “Engineering Process for the Plastic-contaminated Seafood Problem

We have provided a number of support channels for the 1200 students enrolled in the programme. Please send them to the ENGR 101 subject guide page in the first instance. https://canterbury.libguides.com/engr/Plastics-in-seafood

  • ENGR 101 Subject guide
  • A recorded lecture is being released to the ENGR 101 class this week.
  • Asklive
  • 1-1-Many bookable zoom sessions with Brian or Myself (we have a limited number of slots available).
  • During the week of the 14th-18th we are running virtual tutorials about how to start.  These run daily at 8:30am and 12:30pm.  Each tutorial will run for 30 minutes maximum.  They can be booked from the library workshops page.
  • On the subject guide there are also quick tutorials on LEARN on How to Start, APA referencing and Multisearch.

For those of you kind souls who assisting on Asklive we expect the number of contacts to increase steadily.  Some basic outlining of the assignment FYI.

  • Topic: Engineering Process for the Plastic-contaminated Seafood Problem
  • Marks: 10% of final grade
  • Due: Friday 18th March at 3pm
  • Type of Assignment: Technical style engineering report
  • Problem Statement: Rapid accumulation of plastic in our oceans has become a global crisis. Microplastics are getting into the food chain of marine animals, and are reaching human bodies through seafood consumption. These microplastics pose potential health risks to human. Seafood, however, will continue to be incorporated into people’s diet due to their nutrition values and people’s dietary preference. The government is required to come up with engineering solution(s) to address the problem
  • Word Limit: 1000 (Does NOT include Title Page, References & any Appendices)
  • Reference Style: APA 7th.  This is marked! A good range of sources, we suggest a minimum of 5.
  • Report style: they need to refer to the report guidelines as to how it is set out, margins, spacing, headings etc.  It is required to have one Graph that they have created using a spreadsheet and one Table.

ENGR 101 2021 Assignment

Kia ora koutou

The ENGR101 students get their first assignment today, which means there may be an uptick of questions about Agricultural GHG problem. You can see their full assignment requirements here.

We will be encouraging students to use AskLIVE for their referencing questions. They are required to use APA for their referencing

If they’re asking questions about where to find literature on their topics, or how to write their assignment, you can link them to the subject guide, to one if the modules we’ve created, or send them to one of the engineering subject librarians.

We’re also running daily drop ins next week from 8:30-9 and 12:30-1, that they can sign up for here.

We have created a plan of support

  1. Visit the Subject Guide
  2. Use the modules
  3. Drop in help sessions
  4. AskLive
  5. Book a 1-1 20 min consultations

Thank you all in advance!

Kiera, Brian and Dave

ENGR 101

Kia Ora everybody,

The Engineering Intermediate ENGR101 assignment is now out.  I have presented two lectures (both also streamed) to the students (1060 ENGR 101 participants) and the assignment has now been released today to the students.  The Assignment is due on Monday 19th March at 3pm

Brian and I have created a subject guide that provides some materials for this project, we have also taken pains to put in possible steps on how to answer the question.  A mind map has even been provided.  As usual the students are marked on a reference list that is in APA format.

http://canterbury.libguides.com/engr/no-flies-on-us

In the first step can we please refer students to this guide.  Brian and I are also offering Adobe Connect sessions every day next week at 12.15pm.  I have put a place holder on the Engineering Meeting room for ENGR 101 all next week for possible consultations (booked in or walk ins).  Brian and I have also reduced the length of our meeting times to cover any increased use of the my scheduler software.  Please expect an increased demand of AskLive as this was specifically demonstrated.

If a house fly question pops up on AskLive can you please confirm that this is for “ENGR 101” as we can use this to track our statistics.

The problem statement:

Engineering Process for House-flies Problem

You are to write a technical style engineering report. The aim of the report is to summarise some aspects of the engineering process that lead to a solution to help prevent house-flies from entering houses. Below is the problem statement:

House-flies pose a threat to hygiene and are recognized as carriers of easily communicable diseases. The fly population tends to increase significantly in summer. Apart from common causes, for example, rotting meat, overripe fruit, bad smells, damp areas etc., flies are also attracted to houses by the heat that they radiate. This becomes a nuisance to many households because people like to have their windows and doors opened during summer. The pest control companies are required to come up with engineering solution(s) to address the problem.

The whole Engineering Process (as covered in class) would be applied to this project. However, for this report, you should only focus on steps 2, 3 AND 4. In “Define Success” (step 2), discuss about possible performance criteria and constraints. In “Find solutions” (step 3), you only need to present one solution briefly so that it can be discussed in the next step. In “Test” (step 4), you will need to describe feasible testing method(s) to ensure the solution meets the selected performance criteria and constraints (e.g. if one of the constraints is that the solution needs to be functional in both day and night time, how would you test your new solution to make sure it meets this requirement). You will not get extra marks for writing about more than these three steps from the Engineering Process.

TEU meeting with Managers

Good Morning,

The Library TEU reps are have our regular meeting with Library Managers tomorrow.  Is there anything else Library staff would like the TEU to bring to the library managers attention?  If you would like to contact any one of the Reps we would be very happy to raise this with our managers.

The library Reps are :

Dave Lane, Felicity Watson, Nick Scullin, Rebecca Taekema & Tim O’Sullivan

May the Fourth Be With You

As tomorrow is officially Star Wars Day (May the Fourth Be With You)  the college of Education College Office are running a quiz at 1pm with hand made chocolate as prizes.  They are also working alongside OEI/OCI material and wish to be more “blue”.

I was looking for a couple of volunteers to join me in competing in the inaugural quiz.  Can you please let me know before hand if you wanted to join me.

dave.lane@canterbury.ac.nz

The quiz will last for less than one hour.  I can meet anyone who wants to join in the fun at the entrance to the college office at 1pm.

The EPS Library will also be doing a display during the day.

Cheers!

Dave

ENGR 101 Assignment 2017

Greeting All,  It’s that time of the year again when the ENGR 101 Students get their very first assignment.  Currently there are 898 students in the course.

Engineering Process for Aircraft Overweight Issues.

There is no one solution to this question! Their assignment requires them to write a technical report that contains, a figure, excel chart and bibliography in APA format.  They are required to cite material in APA style.

In first instant please send them to our subject guide help.

http://canterbury.libguides.com/engr/aircraft-seat-design

We have added some interesting Journal articles, Ebooks, Links to Reports, Aircraft design companies and Aircraft seat standards all already cited in APA format.

The second journal article (Kokorikou, et al)  has been posted up on learn as access problems and copyright means that this is only available to students inside the course.  The students themselves will have to log in.

Multi search is a very good database to start with, depending on their keywords.

As an engineering solution they might need to consult the SAE Aircraft Seat Standards ARP5526D and AS8049C.  These are ONLY available in the EPS library as they cannot be scanned or available electronically.

Students should not cite wikipedia, but can use it as a starting point.

If more help is needed please sent the students to the subject librarians based in EPS…

Dave.
