Update to Covid 19 Library Web information

Mōrena

In accordance with the Government scrapping the Covid Protection Framework, we’ve updated the Library website to reflect those changes:

  • The Covid block has been removed from the homepage.
  • The Covid information page has been moved to the bottom of the Support menu, and no longer contains information about the traffic light system, and instead just links to the main UC Covid page. It still contains information about library services for isolating borrowers.

If you notice any remaining traces of references to old Covid response frameworks anywhere on our website, please let us know.

Ezproxy links still causing trouble in AKO | LEARN

Kia ora koutou,

When we switched to OpenAthens, Digital Services updated all the Ezyproxy URLs in AKO | LEARN to the new formats. However, we are still getting reports of broken links in courses, and it’s now clear that links in URL activities were updated, but not links embedded directly within rich text.

Digital Services are currently looking at how to fix this, but in the meantime you will likely be contact by panicked academics and frustrated students. Until Digital Services come up with a solution, old Ezproxy links can be manually edited and replaced with updated versions from the Link Maker tool. It would also be helpful if Subject Librarians could check links in courses they support (especially for the first half of the courses) and make corrections before they are found.

Please send any tricky linking problems to Library Systems and we’ll do our best to assist.

Also, keep in mind the issue with Zotero, which has also been a common cause of access problems since Ezproxy ended.

Ngā mihi,

New OpenAthens link maker tool

Mōrena

We have been working on a new link maker tool for creating links to e-resources via OpenAthens, and to convert old ezproxy links to OpenAthens URLs.

https://digital-library.canterbury.ac.nz/resources/open/oalinkmaker/

There are a lot of weird and wonderful links out there, as well as a number of different link types for different resources, so it won’t always generate perfect links. Please test your results, and send any issues to Library Digital Services. We’d like this tool to work comprehensively across all of our resources, so feedback is very much encouraged! We’ll continue to tweak the tool to incorporate as many different rules and resources as we can.

The ezproxy link makers in Learn on the UC intranet will be removed and redirected to this tool in the very near future. Please update any bookmarks you might have for those tools and encourage academics and staff to use the new tool for creating links in Ako | Learn.

Ngā mihi

FluTracking

Apologies if this comes across as a bit spammy, but it’s a good project and who doesn’t love some data gathering for a worthwhile cause?
The Ministry of Health are currently running a drive to recruit more participants for flu tracking. It’s easy to be involved, and the data can be used to track cold and flu in your area.

Their message:

We need more participants all over New Zealand to help us track flu and other viruses like COVID-19.

Please ask 2 friends or colleagues to join us by forwarding this link:

https://www.flutracking.net/join/NZ/inv65
A simple online survey that takes less than 15 seconds each week during flu season can tell us so much. In return you’ll receive a weekly report and a map of influenza-like illness to keep track of where the flu is!
Thanks for your time and support.

How to speed up playback of the staff forum video

Kia ora,

This is a bit of tech advice that won’t be for everyone, but for the more adventurous among you who were hoping to be able to watch lsat week’s staff forum back in 1.5x or even 2x the speed, this is how it can be done. These instructions are for Chrome browsers, but the process is similar for other browsers (the menus will just have slightly different names).

The video has been embedded using HTML5, which doesn’t provide the playback options in the same way as an embedded YouTube video. To change the speed:

Right click on the page and choose Inspect.

From the Elements tab, find the video tag and select it (you can use the highlighted pointer tool to click and select the element):

Switch to the Console tab and type $0.playbackRate = 1.5 (or whichever speed you want) and press enter:

Now the video will playback at your chosen speed, but only for the current session. Once you refresh the browser, the speed will return to normal.

Happy watching!
