Email problems over the weekend

We haven’t had any specific reports of library staff having email problems, but if you have been affected, ITS have sent through an explanation:

Over the last few days we have experienced issues with sending and receiving emails. You may have received bounced or delivery delay messages.

Any emails that were being held due to delay delivery should now have sent.

If you were expecting an email from outside of UC and have not received this please ask the sender to resend (the sender should have received a bounced message from our mail server).

Please forward this email to the affected staff in your department.

We apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

Call for expressions of interest – Kā Kohika redesign

Kia ora koutou

We’re looking for interested people to join a working group that will redesign the look and feel of Kā Kohika to improve its appearance and the overall user experience. If you have a flair for design/UX, you want to help raise Kā Kohika’s profile, you love tinkering with look and feel, or you just want to improve access to our amazing resources, we’d really like to hear from you!

As a member of the working group, you’d be committing to weekly meetings from the 11th–28th of February, and some occasional catch-ups as the project progresses (due to be completed and live by the beginning of Semester 2).

If this appeals to you, and you’ve checked with your manager, please email Library eServices by Friday, 8th February. If you have any questions, please contact Brian (I’ll be on leave until 11th Feb).

Library web server being secured this morning.

At around 9.30-10am today we are expecting ITS to secure our library web server, meaning all remaining insecure pages will move from http to https. There may be a period where there are problems with some content, and we’ll be working to fix any issues. If you find problems with any links, please report them to library eServices.

Please note that most library web content will not be affected by this change – it will only affect pages with a library.canterbury.ac.nz address (not https://www.canterbury.ac.nz/library/ content). Pages that may be affected include:

  • A-Z database pages (and other biblioplus pages, including those used in Subject Guides)
  • Exam papers
  • Room bookings
  • Horizon reports on Camelot

Problem with LibraryH3lp (AskLive) password reset tool

The LibraryH3lp link to reset your password is currently broken – it doesn’t recognise any valid usernames or email addresses.

Their support team have identified the problem and will be fixing it over the weekend. In the meantime, if you’ve forgotten your password and need to log into AskLive, please contact Library eServices and we’ll be able to reset your password via the admin tools.

Reminder about ProQuest eBook Central ezproxy issue

Kia ora koutou,

We have a long-standing problem with ProQuest eBook Central (and formerly EBL) that sometimes causes users to log into a generic UC Library account, and not their own individual accounts. This can cause problems with individual user settings (such as note-taking), and most obviously, the list of recently viewed titles will contain books that aren’t ones they’ve borrowed.

While we still don’t have a solution for this problem, this is just a reminder to be aware of this issue. In general, this can happen if someone has been logged into any ezproxied resource, and soon afterwards log into eBook Central in the same browser.

Solutions will depend on individual browser settings, but usually involves one of the following:

  1. Close the browser and reopen it to clear the ezproxy session, then log into eBook Central before any other resources. My tests showed this tended to work best with IE and Firefox (again, this may just be my individual browser settings).
  2. Clear your browser cookies and log into eBook Central before any other resources. Chrome seems to hold onto a cookie that will continue to log you into the same account until that cookie expires or is deleted. This is great if you’re being logged into your own account, but not so useful if you’re stuck in the generic one.
  3. Frequent users of eBook Central may choose to always use a separate browser for eBook Central.

Unfortunately, we’ve looked into a permanent solution for this several times in the past, but haven’t been successful (yet!).

Camelot phone list

We will soon be removing links to the old Camelot telephone list and retiring the page. This page hasn’t been maintained for a long time now, and more accurate contact information can be found via Skype for Business and UC Contacts.

Many building and shared numbers can also be found via Skype, including Central Lending Desk, Macmillan Brown, Law Basement, and Henry Field Storage rooms.

For those of you who would still like to advertise your hours, you can add them to Skype and they will be visible on your contact card. Either click on the “what’s happening today?” blurb,  or on “Set your location” (under your name and availability in Skype) to add text:

You can also add your position title and other details to your contact card (right click any contacts, including yourself, to view the contact card). Click the grey “Add” text to edit the details:

Feel free to contact eServices with any questions.
