An invitation to The Grand Tour Symposium 29 Jan

Library staff are cordially invited to attend The Grand Tour Symposium, at SOFA GALLERY, The Arts Centre, on Friday 29 Jan at 3pm.

The current exhibition ‘The Grand Tour’ at SOFA gallery showcases beautiful prints from the 17th to the 19th century by notable European artists such as Piranesi, Watteau and Vernet. The prints have all come from the Macmillan Brown Library collection.

In conjunction with the exhibition a free symposium will take place on Friday 29th of January from 3pm at the SOFA gallery. There will be three short talks by Senior Lecturer David Maskill from Victoria University, Associate Professor Ian Lochhead and Senior Lecturer Emilie Sitzia (both from Canterbury University).

Topics to be addressed will include ‘Piranesi and the power of fragments’, ‘The Grand Tour: Text and Context’, and ‘Enlightenment landscapes’. There will then be a round table with time for questions from the public. Admission is free and refreshments will be provided.

Come along for an afternoon of discoveries.

Grand Tour exhibition – WE NEED TO BORROW CLIPBOARDS

In January, an exhibition at SOFA gallery in the Arts Centre is being launched to showcase the fabulous collection of early European prints from the Library’s collection. The exhibition is titled the Grand Tour. To find out more, go to http://www.sofa.canterbury.ac.nz/

As part of this exhibition, we are going to be offering quiz sheets for children – a first for SOFA I think! So that kids will find it easier to complete the quiz, we need to find a selection of clipboards that they can use. Do you have any clipboards you could spare from 10 Jan -12 Feb 2010? If so, please let me know. I promise they will be returned to you!

Many thanks,

Terri

Heritage Week sculpture trail tours next week

Hi everyone

As part of the Christchurch City Council Heritage week, I am running three sculpture trail tours. We will be coming to a library near you on Monday 19th, Wednesday 21, and Friday 23, between 10.30 12 o’clock. We are focusing this time on the connections between some of our artworks and the heritage week theme of Christchurch in times of conflict, concentrating particularly on the contributions of our artists in WW1 and WW2.

As it is the lead up to exams, I will try to contain the noise as much as possible.

Regards

Terri

End Doll sculpture in Central Library

Good morning everyone,

For those of you who field enquiries about the sculpture trail, please note the End Doll by Ronnie van Hout is being temporarily relocated. Between 31 July – 30 August 2009, End Doll will be on display in ‘Inner Landscapes’ at Sofa Gallery. End Doll will then join its family on display at the Christchurch Art Gallery in ‘Ronnie van Hout: Who Goes There’ from 1 September – 18 October 2009.

The sculpture trail website has been adjusted accordingly, and a sign will be placed in the central library where the doll is usually displayed explaining its absence.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Regards

Terri

Installing artworks in central library

Hi, we are installing several new artworks in central library levels 2 and 4 this afternoon from 1.30pm. I will try to keep the noise to a minimum, but we will have to do some drilling into concrete, which is never a quiet process.

The artworks had to be delivered early, and are currently in the corridor outisde the mailroom on level 1. Please dont move them. If they are in the way give me a call on extension 8669.

Thanks,

Terri
