Earlier this year, we worked with a client Hamish Evans to source architectural drawings of the Arts Centre to support his bid for tenancy of the old Le Cafe building. We are really pleased he was successful and is opening a cafe called Bunsen:
“It would follow a chemistry theme inspired by the building’s history as a chemistry and physics laboratory and lecture hall”
I have been approached by the Graham Nuthall Classroom Trust to find a suitable person to spend a few hours listing their archive collection. This is a paid position, funded by the Trust ( I do not know the hourly wage). This is not an internal UC position, so the person will need to be appointed by the Trust. At this stage I do not know the number of hours or days ( I imagine they will fit in with you, but likely to be Mon-Fri). The collection is currently housed at Education Plus on Dovedale. They are hoping to eventually deposit it in an institution, but first need an appraisal and listing of contents. The material is research data in the form of paper and electronic documents and audio visual material. I will provide some guidance and site supervision, as well as templates for listing the archives. This position would suit someone studying archives and looking for some practical experience. The person needs to be appointed in the next week or so, please contact me if you are interested and I will give you the details of the Trust. More information about the project and the collection is on their website: http://www.nuthalltrust.org.nz/project.shtml
We had a new intern starting today, Rata Holtslag. Rata is working on a project involving the architectural drawings in MB, co-supervised by me and Rosie Ibbotsen in Art History. Rata will be working with me in my office on Tues, Weds and Friday mornings during semester 2. To start with I made her write and intro to you all….
I’m Rata and I am currently doing Art History Honours, with one of the papers I chose being the Community Engagement Internship. In doing this I wanted to gain some practical skills while also getting an idea of what it means to work in various fields, and I had in interest in archiving and library work and was aware that Macmillan Brown housed some interesting collections that I wanted to engage with – not just as part of my internship, but also to inform my ARTH480 research paper.
For the internship I will be researching and writing a short synopsis on the major collections of architectural drawings in the library with the intention that it will be more accessible to the public and students, and researching the use of the drawings in teaching at UC and other universities and composing a report on how this can be done.
Please make Rata feel welcome if you see her in MB. I’ll keep you updated on her progress too.
You might be interested in this talk, which is part of Beca Heritage Week. I have been co-supervising 2 CoA interns along with Rosemary Baird from Heritage NZ on this project. The interns have been researching historic sites, curating an exhibition and organizing this talk. Please do book in if you are interested…..

Nicole and I have been working on a presentation which I’m delivering at the 2015 ARANZ conference. I’m going to do a practice session of the paper next week. Please do come along and give me feedback if you can. The paper is awkwardly titled – You’re standing on my toe! What archivists can learn from library cataloguers and vice versa ( the theme was “footprints”).
Weds 2 Sept 11 am – Puaka James Hight, Room 210.
Paper is 30 mins, but questions and discussion at the end would be great.
