LibGuides have had an upgrade

You can check out the new features here.

Apparently the width of the columns can now be altered

You can customize your box colours ( many ghastly combinations will be possible I am sure )

You can also customize individual boxes ( this may be very useful)

You can also flip the position of the profile box ( but surely we should have this information all in the same place !!)

Provide a description with your Libguides title

Hi
I noticed how my Antarctic studies page didn’t look as good as I thought it should: No description provided for Antarctic studies page

I realised that it needed a description like the one I provided for Geological Sciences:
Description provided for the Geological studies page

If you haven’t added a description to your title you still can. Once you have logged in, go to Guide Functions ( next to Preview) | Change Title/Description. Now you can add an explanation of what your LibGuide is designed to do……

Libguides: Removing unwanted bold formatting when you are copying from existing guides ….

Marc Bertone from Springshare has provided a solution to this problem.. within five minutes of my asking him!!

The reason you cannot un-bold some of the items in that box is because they are setup as “headings” (rather than normal text), which explains why the font is larger/bolder than the other text. This also explains why selecting the text and clicking the “B” icon does not remove the “bold” formatting, since “bold” tags are not being used in that part of the box.

To undo this, just highlight the text you want to reduce and then change the format dropdown (top-left position in the editors toolbar) to “paragraph”.
If you would prefer that I flatten all the text in the box down to the normal formatting, just let me know and I will take care of it for you. In the future you can avoid these formatting problems by using the “paste as plain text” button in the editor (2nd row, 2nd to last button), which will remove the formatting and paste just the content into the box.

Libguides: the 10 minute guide continued….

when you are working on your LibGuides you might like to think about how you can use the additional features in Libguides that are not available with our present subject guides:

Have you considered adding:
An interactive poll…this could be about the user’s favourite database…or journal or book….

User link submission….this could be on something topical

Event/Date box….. use your imagination

I am looking forward to seeing what ideas Information Librarians can come up with. Cheers Alison J

Try moving those LibGuide boxes around….

You may have decided that you didn’t like a box you had created in a particular place or page.
Don’t delete it as you can move it around :

You will find at the top of the screen below the tags, an option marked Page Options
 time to click and drag!

Open this and choose Reorder boxes.

You now have the possibility of clicking and dragging boxes from one column to another.

Wait for the box to turn green before you stop dragging….
 find this one
and remember to save updates at the bottom of the screen.

Sometimes a bit of gentle swearing helps……

Sometimes there is a resource needs much more attention than people give it

One resource I wanted to highlight in particular is a current awareness version for Antarctic studies that is just so goooood. Its called the Antarctic Alert and in an imaginary world I would like one of these for each of my subjects …but thats not going to happen

But as I think its worth the publicity, I have put it in its own box. You might like to think of an underrated or underused resource in your subject area and put it in its own box too!

An interesting innovation with Libguides

Hi
In preparation for the Antarctic Cert students coming this week, I made a box called Recent interesting papers on the Antarctic and I have provided direct links to them from our resources. I chose a variety of papers from Google Scholar published in the last year that reviewed a wide range of topics, because I was only looking for broad interdisciplinary papers, not highly specialist ones.

I hope they will inspire the students and even the staff !

Identifying where they have come from has assisted my lesson planning as a substantial amount of them come from Wiley Interscience… a resource I have never recommended to ANTA students before.

Its helped me keep up to date with publishing trends on the topic too.

My Anta guide is not yet published … but give this idea some thought to see if you can use it. Its a roundabout way of advertising our resources too !
