Tomorrow between 11.00am and 12 noon, the first year law students will be doing the annual scavenger hunt around the University. They have tasks to complete in the Central Library, which will involve walking up and down the front steps carrying textbooks, finding the Law Liaison Librarian, locating the New Zealand Law Reports and the High Demand collection. There will be clues attached to shelves on Level 6 (Detective Fiction), Level 7 (NZLRs) and Level 2 (Law High Demand). Please do not remove these! We will try and ensure that they make no noise and cause as little disruption as possible. Any questions, let me know.

A message from Sue Johnston
Dear Friends and ‘absolutely fabulous’ colleagues
What a wonderful farewell you gave me! Thank you all for your good wishes, both in person and on my card, and for the very generous voucher to spend at Terra Viva. Dave and I will come shopping on the 9th February when in Christchurch for a wedding. The gardening gloves will be put to good use too and the Lifestyle magazine is all about eggs, making cheese and lots of other things I am now vitally interested in. Thank you!
I travelled north on Wednesday, fully loaded – it is amazing what a Toyota surf can swallow, and with a bike on the back. It is good to be here but I don’t want to miss you all too much, so please do visit me at Elterwater in Ward Beach Road if you are passing.
With thanks and best wishes always,
Sue

Central Library Liaison support over summer
The Liaison Librarian support in the level 2 Help Zone has not been well used since the end of term as exams overtake assignments and students don’t need as much help to find and use the library resources. We will therefore be suspending the service over the summer starting from today. However, the liaison librarians are still here and very willing to help. If you have any queries at the front desk, please refer them on to us and we will ensure that there is always someone available to come down to level 2 when required. The best way to do this is still to use ASKLive to contact the best person for the enquiry. If they are not available on AskLive, then ring the workroom and someone will respond. There will be a list of names and numbers at the level 2 desk for ease of access.
Any questions, please let me know.

“Refresh your Legal Research Skills”
I am running a series of classes this week aimed at students wanted to boost their legal research skills before the next round of assignments. There are four classes in the series:
– Finding Legal Commentary
– Finding NZ Legislation and Case Law
– Legal materials from other jurisdictions (including Westlaw)
– NZ Legal Platforms (Brookers/LexisNexis)
Students (or you!) can book online from the Library webpage. Any questions, let me know.

Legal Research Skills Certificates
I have just created Legal Research Skills certificates for a number of law students. They have been notified that they can collect their certificate from me on level 5 of Central Library. If you find any confused students, please either give me a call (x6752, x7024, x7804 – any number will get me!) or send them my way.
Thanks,
Sara
Central Library Help Zone cover
The Liaison Librarians will not be staffing the Central Help Zone on Level 2 of the Central library for the next 4 weeks, over the exam period and mid-semester break. However, we will be available at our desks to take referrals and will happily come down to help. The contact details for the all the liaison librarians are available from the web page. Also remember to check AskLive, as if the person you need is online, this is a quick and easy way to get in touch.

Sue Johnston’s last day!
Sue is leaving us for 4 months sabbatical in sunny Blenheim and her last day is Friday. Therefore we will be having morning tea on Friday in the Central Library staffroom at 10.30. Please come! All cake offerings gratefully received.

Law mid-sessional papers
The Law School sets mid-semester tests each year, known as “mid-sessionals” for the compulsory 200 level courses (Criminal, Public, Land, Torts and Contract). The past papers are kept in the “Self Loan” area on Level 2 of Central Library, in serial boxes at the end of the law high demand collection. If the students cannot find the papers for their particular course, they should try again later, as it is likely that someone else is copying/using them. However, if they consistently cannot access them, refer them to either Sue Johnston or me.
Thanks!

Margaret Greville’s farewell
Did anyone take photos of MG’s farewell? I am hoping to include some in the Law School newsletter.
Thanks, Sara
