If Econ105 students have problems using Econdata (aka NZ Time series), they will need to install the DX for windows programme on their login.
The instructions are linked to the Econdata or New Zealand Time Series links on the A-Z database page.
This database is campus only – you cannot access it from home
I received this plea from Catherine Woods who is the administrator in the College of Business and Law. The war memorial library is located at Church corner. If you know anyone who may be interested in this voluntary position, please contact Catherine
I am writing to you as librarians, in a community capacity.
My father is Chair of the Riccarton War Memorial Library which runs at Church Corner on a part-time basis.
It is a relatively small but cherished little community facility.
He is now 83 and looks after my mother who has dementia.
He has given many years to the library but he really needs someone to take over.
He has had no luck at all with this and is not happy to just leave it as it could well close without the voluntary committee.
I wonder if you know of any retired and/or part-time librarians who might be interested in taking this on even if for a short term?
Of course it doesn’t have to be a librarian at all as it can be run by anyone as it is a very basic system.
I am just trying to help him out and it suddenly occurred to me there may well be someone at UC who has taken voluntary redundancy or whatever and who might actually find it a great transition ….. into a different life with more time on their hands.
Anyway if you think of anyone I would really really appreciate it you could get them to contact me in the first instance.
Thanks for reading this!
Bye now
Regards
Catherine Woods

The Library is currently trialling another Alexander Street Press product – Global Business and Economics in Video.
If you are interested in evaluating this product, please send your comments to Janette Nicolle by 20th June.
Thanks
Over the next few weeks Maketing 202 students will be researching their assignment on marketing natural health supplements in New Zealand. They will need to use the Nielsen Market Information Digest which can only be accessed on the 2 PCs in Central Library outside Room 210. The data is already loaded on the PCs, and students just need to click the appropriate icon. Students should use the IE version of the database (not Firefox).
Instructions on how to use Market Information Digest are available on the ppt slides of the library lecture which is linked to their Learn page.
They will also need to use Passport GMID and a variety of other sources which are also outlined on their Learn page.
Please contact Cuiying or Janette if students are having problems.
The library has just gained access to a new database called Passport GMID. Produced by Euromonitor, Passport GMID provides business intelligence on industries, countries, and consumers. It offers integrated access to statistics, reports, insightful comment and business information sources. Coverage is global, more than 200 countries are researched, including NZ.
Passport GMID will be useful not just for business students, but also for political science, media, sociology etc. Have fun exploring – there’s a wealth of information.
Google Scholar now provides the ability to produce citations of records in APA, MLA or Chicago format.
Click the More link at the bottom of each record to see this new feature.

This semester’s marketing assignment (mktg 202) is about curbing binge drinking. Students will be given a lecture by the library tomorrow and the assignment is due on 15th August.
Some potentially troublesome resources that they will need to use are:
Market Information Digest (A.C. Nielsen)
This is a CD product and is only available on 2 PCs in the Law library. Please send the students to the Law Desk.
Infoshare and other Statistics NZ time series databases (free online).
Orbis (Library database) – Industry reports for NZ wine, beer and spirits industries. Click Industry Research – Market values – Geographical Scope – NZ
There is a topic page on the Management subject guide with links to key resources:
Cuiying, Janette and the other Law staff are able to help.
The OSIRIS database has been upgraded to ORBIS which offers access to a much greater number of worldwide company reports including New Zealand unlisted companies.
The search interface is exactly the same as OSIRIS but with the advantage of added content. Links to the new database have been updated on the Business and Economics Subject Guides.
Please refer any students (probably from FINC classes) to Janette or Cuiying if there are any problems.
There are an increasing number of finance students who will be wanting to use DataStream, a financial database. Most of them should have attended a training session.
There are a few important facts to remember about Datastream.
1. It can only be used on campus on Library PCs
2. Only ONE person can use it at a time.
3. Before the first use, students should follow the instructions given under the DataStream link on the library’s A-Z database page.
Please ask students to contact Cuiying or Janette if they have problems using DataStream. It’s best if students use DataStream in the Law Library where help is available.
The 2012 round of the Marketing 202 assignment has started. This semester students need to investigate ISP providers in NZ (not pizzas). The slides from the Library presentation are on their Learn site and there is a topic page on the Management Subject Guide at:

Please refer any student enquiries to Cuiying or me in the Law Library. There are 77 students enrolled in the class.
