Learning Skills have shifted to UCSA in the building formerly occupied by Student Health.
The current occupants of Level 7 of the James Hight building are:
Adult Student Support
Disability Resource Centre
Hardship & Budgeting
Mentoring Programmes
Student transition services
International Student Support is still located in Creyke Road & The Disability Resource Centre is still in the Maths & Computer Science Building (Rm420)
Course Mart will be open on Level 1 of the James Hight building from 18th February through to 13th March. During the daytime there will be access past the lift construction.
Parking permits for staff and students are available on Level 1 of the Central Library, coming in from the outside doors turn hard right in front of the partition where the lift is being built – $92 for whole year, $55 for one semester.
Please have a look at the Library links on the Moodle library practice course. This is the standard template that would be in all courses but there would still be the possibility of working with course coordinators to extra content outside the library block. The idea is that the links should be at course level as much as possible.
Links to core library resources that would be valuable to every undergraduate course might include:
Library catalogue
Restricted Loans (course level)
LibGuides home-page (or topic page if one has been developed for that course)
Referencing/Citation style (e.g. direct link to APA)
Exam papers (for the course)
Library assignment or online tutorial (if there is one available)
AskLIVE
Even though Moodle will not be universally implemented until Semester 2 , the template will be rolled out to lecturers from the beginning of April. There is a discussion forum in the Moodle library practice course for sharing ideas.
With Catherine’s help I managed to insert the image from the existing subject guides into the welcome box – this will eliminate another box on the home page. Here’s some instructions:
1. Click on the image icon (picture of a tree)
2. Click to upload the file from Baldrick
3. Find file & click to select it
4. Alignment – use the drop down menu to select top, bottom, left, right etc.
5. To position text, click on the image and use the left & right arrows
I’ve done this on the ESOL and German LibGuides – both on the home-page and the journals pages. I think the use of images improves LibGuides greatly.
If students need assistance with setting up wireless laptops or other IT matters they will need to make an appointment with IT staff. This can be done by visiting the IT Help Desk or phoning 6060. It’s helpful to point out these services may not be available on the spot.
The printer nearest the Help Desk has a problem with smudging. I hve rung Raeco who will send a technician out this afternoon. The Reference no. is 9177799
There’s now a CounterCulture category for LibGuides. Here’s a forum to showcase any creative ideas you have using LibGuides and to discuss any problems encountered. Currently Catherine is working on guidelines for transferring database driven content to LibGuides and designing a LibGuides banner.
