Printing

In October last year, Library printing had dropped to under 8,000 pages per month.  Which was a drop of 20% from our previous monthly usage of 10,000.

At the start of this year, it looked like the drop was continuing… but instead printing has slowly increased again.

Total pages Colour pages
March 6,149 3,352
April 4,835 1,457
May 9,349 3,517
June 7,790 3,093

Printers consume paper, toner chemicals, and power. Reduce printing and you directly reduce the impact of all three on your environmental footprint.

It’d be great if we could keep reducing so please think before you print.

Inside Out #20

For this fortnight’s Inside Out, I’m leaning into my librarian and sharing some of my favourite recent readings.

Those of you with family abroad may have been heartened by the opening of Aotearoa|New Zealand’s borders… it seems prospective international students are a bit more pessimistic in outlook, which is already affecting budgets across higher education.

Ever felt like you’re running fast to stay in the same place? Well, you are. This article explains that “skillsets for jobs have changed by around 25% since 2015”. This reminded me of how we’ve learned how to use Zoom, are now adapting to MicrosoftTeams, and have all worked out how to deal with a headset which will not let you speak in either!

Learning new technologies is a small change in comparison to the disruption COVID-19 has wrought. Often described as having the biggest single impact on higher education since World War II, this quick read helped me deal with my personal response, by talking about how to process emotions like shock and anger.

And last but not least, for those of you who prefer your “reading” to be a video. An inspirational video, which I’ve come back to several times over the course of the last year. It is about the construction of Pae Korokī by the Tauranga City Libraries’ Heritage and Research Team. It helped me understand what a Tīriti|Treaty of Waitangi based approach can look like in a library.

Library Operational Plan for 2022

After a couple of months in draft (darn you, COVID!), we have finalised our Operational Plan for 2022: https://ucshare.canterbury.ac.nz/management/dep/dep002/Managers/Planning/Operational%20Planning/2022%20Operational%20Planning/Operational-plan-2022.docx?Web=1

As usual, managers will update the plan every quarter. And we will amend the actions in response to UC’s strategic direction.

We don’t have a snazzy image to accompany the plan, but if we did, it might look a bit like this…

Inside Out #13

Welcome to the “unlucky for some” 13th edition of Inside Out… an update on what is happening inside and outside of the Library.

So this last fortnight has been a bit of a rollercoaster.

Improving Access to Māori Resources

A key focus for 2022.  I’ve just finished drafting the project closure report so click here for a sneak peak.

UC Digital Screen Campus

Coming soon to a screen new you…. high quality indie films created on the Dovedale campus. Following last week’s announcement, Robyn Nuthall presented to Library managers about this project. We learnt about the likely repurposing for film production of the Henry Field Library in 2023.  We will discuss with the Space Management team how to manage this.

ITS restructure

The new ITS  structure continues to be put in place. Currently lots of jobs are being advertised and IT aim to be all done by April. We have sadly lost Shona van Ee as the Library’s key contact but continue to work closely with other IT colleagues.

Note: if you need IT help, in-person support is based on the ground floor of Matariki

UC Graduate School

The Postgraduate Office are setting up governance and project boards and the workstreams will start shortly. We will be invited to participate in this. The soft launch of the new Graduate School supporting PhDs and masters is scheduled for the second half of 2022.
