Welcome to Alert Level 1

We moved to Alert Level 1 last night. The all Library Staff Forum is scheduled for 2pm today. In this forum, we will be discussing what this change means for the Library and the services we provide. Anne will also give an update on how the COVID-19 situation has affected our planning for the year.

The meeting will take place via Zoom. The great timing of this is all due to incredible forethought and planning and not sheer luck 🙂

Staff meeting with Ian Wright

Thanks for joining us for the Zoom meeting with Ian this morning. The session has been recorded and will be available shortly. Ian thanked the Library and talked about the University’s plans. Ian also answered the following specific questions

1.       The money in the budget was talked about as trades training and apprenticeships.  Is there money in the budget for retraining and adult learning that will come to universities?

2.       I’m interested in whether you think COVID has re-focussed any areas of teaching/research in terms of what we are marketing as UC’s strengths

3.       To what extent UC will continue to consider the on-campus experience is important?

4.       How does UC define the “good” areas for the research?

5.       Any thoughts of possible institutional cooperation with ITPs in technical training areas?

6.       It’s good to hear about the tertiary alliance in Canterbury.  How strong are the relationships with employers to support joint initiatives with government to establish new courses?

7.       Any update on the when the Library review is going to take place?

COVID-19 update

Anne and the rest of the management team would like to say a formal thank you for all the effort people have put in this week.

You’ve set yourselves up to work from home, taken crash courses in various new technologies and continued to provide excellent services to our UC staff and students. Ka pai.

Your work has enabled us to provide regular updates to the senior management team and to help the incident management team in their work. This communication has been appreciated. It has shown the Library as responsive and helpful.

Take care and thanks again

COVID-19 update

An update since our last post on COVID-19.

  • A UC staff FAQ has appeared which has lots of useful information and a strangely fascinating list of cleaning practices in PJH.
  • Managers have updated the Business Continuity Plan (available K/Health-Safety/disaster_response/ContinuityPlan/Library-Continuity-Plan-V10.docx )
  • We have a webpage and news item on COVID-19 for users.
  • Managers have been meeting with staff who have scheduled travel to discuss the options for working from home.

news item: https://www.canterbury.ac.nz/library/uc-library-news/2020/covid-19.html

Feel free to ask any questions as this is a fluid situation and things are changing daily.

COVID-19 update

Library Managers met today and discussed various scenarios that may arise with the COVID-19 virus.  As well as the University webpage on COVID-19 we are aware of a number of questions.  We have submitted a list of questions to date to HR.

We also identified preparatory actions:

  • All Library staff check and, where needed, update contact and emergency details on PeopleSoft
  • All Library staff familiarise ourselves with remote computer access options (handy guide on the Intranet)
  • Create for a webpage on the Library website which advises services available to students who may be affected eg by having to self-isolate
  • Managers check their copy of team phone numbers
  • Managers familiarise themselves with the Business Continuity Plan (and update the key contacts in this Plan)
  • Managers agree with any staff members who are planning overseas travel what their plan would be in any event of delayed return or needing to self-isolate on their return

You are welcome to discuss with your manager any other questions you have. We will provide further updates in due course.

Web of Science reminder

We have switched off Web of Science (WoS is was not is). In a possible last ditch attempt to get UC to keep our subscription, Clarivate sent me this wooden cheeseboard set just before Christmas.

I’m sure many of you have dealt with WoS queries and slightly irritated former-WoS users. Despite my love of cheese, I am willing to gift this amazing piece of wood to the first person to post below. May the cheese ease your WoS woes.

Caveats: Winner must collect the board from Helen’s office. No backsies.
