Open Christchurch Architectural Festival 2024

For the fourth year in a row, the annual Open Christchurch Architectural Festival included several University of Canterbury buildings, including our very own Puaka-James Hight! As always, this event was a great opportunity to show off our collection of architectural drawings held in the archives (as well as some other cool things like 3D printed models of PJH, and our enduring concrete award!).

We ran the event similarly to previous years, with the self-guided tours being particularly popular! We saw a total of 142 people over the course of the day, which was a large increase compared to last year, where we saw 87 people come through. We had a mixture of visitors, including current students who were keen to jump into a tour group to see their own building in more detail. We also had a visit from one of the carpenters who had worked on the building when it was under construction!

This year was particularly special because it is our building’s 50th anniversary of opening! To celebrate this, we had a memory wall where people could write fond memories of their time in the building on a postcard and add it to the wall. This year was also unique as we were promoting Erin’s ‘Drawing Connections’ exhibition currently being shown at Tūranga, exploring the architectural legacy of Cecil Wood.

Overall, it was a great day, and we look forward to hopefully doing it all again next year!

The display will be between the elevators in PJH for a little while longer, so do pop over and have a look before it ends!

Thanks to everyone who has helped with this event!

Herea tō waka | Orientation debrief

Kia ora koutou!

As we rapidly approach Rā Tōmene | Open Day on Friday 30th August, I wanted to give a detailed debrief of our efforts for Herea tō waka | Welcome Day which was in February (and the orientation period in general, including Summer Starter).

Firstly (and of significance!), was Central comms’ subtle change in name from ‘Orientation Day’ to the new and improved ‘Welcome Day’ (of which sits within the ‘Orientation period’). Gone are the days where we refer to both significant days as the generic “O’Day!” (a relief to most of us, I am sure!).

Principles

Herea tō waka in 2024 was about connecting and reengaging with our students on campus and in our libraries. This is one of our core events which we use to support our goal of connecting people to knowledge. We aimed to show manaaki to our new and returning students in our libraries, and at the Ori market, to show the services we have available (in brief!).

Connection

Greeters at PJH

In preparation for the market day on Friday, we had greeters from across our library teams welcoming guests into PJH. We made use of the bespoke t-shirts with our UC library images designed by Ryan Dooley so that our team was recognisable by students. The meet and greet ran for the week leading up to orientation.

Engagement

Library101 sessions

This year the library tried to build on a successful model from the earlier Rā Tōmene in 2023 where we ran very tightly focussed brief Library 101 sessions across the week of Herea tō waka. The purpose of offering the sessions was to create opportunities for our ākonga to engage with our services and our staff early, so when they need our services they’ve already met us before! The idea for the sessions was to focus on “library survival skills”: the three or four key ideas that would help students be successful in their study and library use. People from both the ELS and LTR teams participated but uptake was not what we hoped. In review, we think that the orientation period of the year is the wrong time for this sort of introductory material and that in future, we would attempt to move it closer to the point of demand – when the first assessments start to be handed out.

UC Library stall

The library stall on Welcome Day (previously ‘Orientation Day’) was a fantastic opportunity for connecting with students (whanaungatanga). The stall held 2024 postcards, library guides, subject librarian guides, and Te Rua guides. We also promoted our Library101 sessions which are being held the first two weeks of semester. We chose TikTok as our primary social media to promote at the stall, as a way to grow our following with our brand-new account! In total, we saw 387 people engage with us at our Welcome Day stall!

Summer Starter

Following Herea tō waka, we continued to engage with our student body through our stall at the Summer Starter Expo in late February! This expo is run through the UCSA at Haere-roa and is a great opportunity for us to get out and engage and connect with students in their space, so when they venture into the library they are welcomed by familiar and friendly faces! For summer starter, we focussed on promoting our subject specialists and the services they offer (including promoting upcoming workshops and classes). A huge thanks to all the subject specialists who were able to come down and help out at the stall! We managed to connect with 130 people!

Thank you to everyone for helping with this very busy time of year!

Open Christchurch Architectural Festival (Sunday 5th May 2024)

Kia ora koutou,

On Sunday the 5th of May between 11am and 2pm, Puaka-James Hight will be joining a number of other UC buildings featuring in the annual city-wide architectural event, Open Christchurch! Open Christchurch is a celebration of architecture and city planning run by Te Pūtahi, Centre for Architecture and City Making.

As part of our support of this annual event, we will have a display in PJH celebrating its design and architecture, and themed collateral for people to take. Staff will also be hosting our visitors and providing self-guided tours. This is a repeat of what we have run for Open Christchurch in the past.

The display will be up for a period of time before and after the event, so swing by and have a look! Of special interest this year, we are celebrating the 50th birthday of our beloved Puaka-James Hight building! Plus, we will also be promoting Erin’s ‘Drawing Connections’ exhibition currently being shown at Tūranga, exploring the architectural legacy of Cecil Wood.

Ngā Mihi,

Isabella, Erin, Roman, Zina, Ryan, Hui, and Sarah

UCSA Winter Wellness stall 2023

The 2023 UCSA Winter Wellness Expo was held in Haere-roa, on Thursday 27 July, 10am-2pm. Overall, it was a great day, and we managed to engage with 228 students (slightly fewer than the 315 in 2022), but they were fruitful engagements nonetheless!

Te Rua Makerspace was the main focus of the library stall at this year’s Winter Wellness Expo. The expo aligns with Te Rua’s goals to enable students to positively impact their wellbeing through creativity and relaxation. The welcoming and engaging energy of Te Rua was well represented by multiple makerspace-made items as well as friendly and knowledgeable library staff. The new knitting machine was on display which was very popular indeed, with students showing keen interest in how it worked and what else could be made with it. We also had a small stash of pre-made knitted hats, and badges made in Te Rua for people to take away with them.

Overall, it was a resounding success and hopefully will see some new faces in the library (and in Te Rua), as well as the return of our regular Te Rua aficionados!

Ngā mihi,

Isabella and Ryan

We need you! Rā Tōmene | Open Day 2023

Kia ora koutou!

It’s that time of year again! We’re looking for volunteers to help with our Rā Tōmene | Open Day stall on Friday 8 September (9am-5pm).

Event Info:

Rā Tōmene | Open Day 2023 will be taking place on Friday 8 September, and there are currently over 1600 registered attendees! This is our key recruitment event for future students, parents and whānau, and its success depends on all our involvement!

Library activations:

  • LIBRARY101 sessions and tours – all now fully booked! Attendees will learn how the libraries can support them in their studies at UC. Sessions will cover general library support, subject expertise, MB expertise, and how Te Rua can support their time at UC. All attendees will receive a UC Library branded tote bag filled with branded merch and library brochures –  if you have anything you’d like us to include, please let me (Isabella) know!
  • Library Stall – a stall located in the Open Day market with other UC teams. The stall is a chance to engage with a wide range of people interested in UC as a place of study, and is the perfect opportunity for whanaungatanga and to make our prospective students feel welcome and supported by the library! If you would like to help out on the stall, please add your name to a slot (or two!) in the roster sheet currently saved on the K:drive here: K:\Operations\Marketing\Events&Promotions\Rā Tōmene (Open Day)\Open Day Rā Tōmene 2023\Stall\Open Day Puna Stall Roster_2023.docx
  • Te Rua and Library Lounge – Te Rua will be on display for prospective students to walk through and see what’s on offer! The Lounge space behind Te Rua will be a quiet and peaceful zone for whānau to take a break and rest their feet.

Ngā mihi,

The Library Rā Tōmene tīma (Isabella, Dale, Lani, Brian, Kerry)

We want YOU!…for the UCSA Winter Wellness Expo!

Kia ora koutou,

The annual UCSA Winter Wellness Expo is coming up and I am looking for volunteers to help engage with students at our stall!

When and where is it?

Thursday 27 July

10am -2pm (you don’t need to stay this long!)

Haere-roa (UCSA building)

What do I need to do?

The team will set up and pack down the stall. All you’ll need to do is turn up and engage with students!

What should I talk about with students?

Good pātai! Primarily, we want to let students know we’re here for them, and to promote our services. As the focus of this event is wellness, our focus will mirror this and we will be primarily promoting Te Rua Makerspace as one of the key wellness services (or spaces!) we offer (although it will also be a fabulous opportunity to engage students about the other fantastic services we offer!).

Haven’t spent much time in Te Rua? Not to worry! Jess or Ryan (our fabulous Te Rua duo) will also be at the stall to field technical Te Rua enquiries.

Okay I’m in! How do I sign up?

We’re glad to have you onboard! Please add your name to your preferred timeslot(s) in the Word doc saved on the K:drive here:

Matariki shared kai on Thursday

Kia ora koutou,

The rising of Matariki around mid-winter marks the start of a New Year, a time when crops were harvested, and seafood and birds that had been collected were stored away. This ecological shift in season marks the new year – a time to celebrate new life and new beginnings.

To celebrate Matariki, please come along to a shared kai this Thursday (13 July) at 10am-11:30am (swing by at a time when you’re free!) in the space between the level 5 tearoom and Aurelia/Helen/Kat’s offices.

Please bring something to share if you are able to. It will be great to catch-up over some kai!

Ngā mihi,

Isabella, Aurelia, Jemma, Lani,
