Central Library CLOSED on Sunday

Central Library will be closed on Sunday 9 July (this Sunday) due to the campus-wide heating outage, therefore all UC Libraries will be closed on Sunday (MB will be routinely closed over the weekend, and EPS is closed on the weekend over the mid-semester break).

The boilers will be off from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday to allow for the work that is being carried out to convert from a coal-fired boiler system to one running on renewables.  The consequent difficulty of heating the building, our inability to use mobile electric heaters, the time for the building to reheat, the forecast external temperature and the lack of sun, would mean a pretty  unpleasant experience for our students and staff. Both People & Culture and UCSA support this approach and student numbers are low, so this should not inconvenience a large number of people.

Thanks to the marketing team, Dale and our eResources team for the rapid messaging that has gone out on our social media, digital screens, posters etc. Simon will come in to be around for an hour at 10:00 a.m. to manage communications with any disappointed users who have not seen the messaging.

UC Library Marketing Group Engagement Strategy 2023-2025

Kia ora koutou!
I am delighted to present to you the UC Library Marketing Group Engagement Strategy 2023-2025!
This strategy provides the guiding direction and framework for the library’s engagement activities promoting our services, spaces, and staff for the next two years. The focus is firmly in Ngā Uara, which in turn, frames our purpose, tuia te tangata ki te mātauranga | connecting people with knowledge. This is then united in the strategy’s vision: “We connect people to knowledge by extending care and empowering others to ensure everyone feels welcome, engaged by, safe and supported in our libraries (Manaakitanga). People are valued and recognised as the heart of the library community (Whanaungatanga). Our community is fully aware of, and utilises the resources we nurture, and accesses the services and spaces we offer to succeed (Tiakitanga)”.
Like most pieces of work, this strategy has been a product of many people, so I would like to acknowledge and extend my grateful thanks to those who contributed to this work. Firstly, massive kudos to our strategy project group: Tomo Shibata, Brian McElwaine, Juliet Lackersteen, Ryan Dooley, Hannah O’Dwyer, Leah Pengelly, and Zina Swanson. Thank you also to the remaining members of the Library Marketing Group: Romy Forrer, Roman Lytollis, Sarah Johnston, and Lisa Davies, our Specialists: Jemma Wiki, and Caroline Syddall, and special thanks to the library managers for your feedback, support, and endorsement.
You can check out the final version of the strategy here:

Rā Tōmene/Open Day 2022 Event Summary

Kia ora koutou!

Please enjoy the 2022 Rā Tōmene/Open Day event summary below, but first, I just wanted to extend a MASSIVE thank you to everyone who contributed to Rā Tōmene/Open Day this year, we really couldn’t have done it without your Manaakitanga, Whanaungatanga, and Tiakitanga.

A huge amount of planning went into this event, as it is one of our largest events of the year. It is also one of our most important events, as we are appealing to prospective students. Furthermore, this year was particularly special because it was the first year that Rā Tōmene was able to run as-normal in three years, due to covid-19.

Puna Stall

The Puna Stall was part of the UC Info Hub located down on the Beatrice Tinsley quad and was a great success! The team engaged with approximately 323 people while promoting our two O’Day competitions (Puna Passport and Insta choc giveaway), giving away freebies (postcards, badges, and stickers), and answering questions about the library’s services. Mini info tables were also set up at each library and included handy resources for prospective students to browse and collect as they ventured into our libraries. The resources included printed Puna Passports and stickers, 2022 library brochures, postcards, and self-guided tour guides.

In addition to the Info Hub stall, the team also set up a display in PJH which represented all three libraries (and included 3D printed models of each library thanks to Zina and Ryan!). In PJH, floor stickers were strategically used to direct people into the makerspace, through to the Puna Lounge, and to our self-guided tour station. The self-guided tour guides were highly successful and an estimated 1500 O’Day visitors were engaged by library staff, as they entered PJH.

Puna Passport

The Puna Passport challenge was also a success, with 37 entries from across our libraries. Our three winners have been drawn and will each receive a bespoke UC Puna library tourism tee, designed by Ryan!

Puna Lounge

The refreshments in the Puna Lounge were gratefully received by weary students, visitors and whānau. The citrus-infused water was especially favoured by all!

Overall, Rā Tōmene 2022 was a successful day, thanks to everyone getting involved! We look forward to next year!

Ngā mihi,

Isabella (on behalf of the Rā Tōmene Library events team)

In collaboration with Riccarton High School, Macmillan Brown Library staff (led by Caroline Syddall) helped students find resources on assignment topics relating to Pacific cultures.

Te Rua: Sustainability, 3D-printed Catan & more!

The Te Rua team hosted a casual gaming afternoon this month, with a big range on offer: from quick and easy card games to a 3D-printed version of Catan! The team also had a stall at the sustainability expo at the beginning of the month where students were shown how the makerspace holds a multitude of resources to reuse, upcycle and be creative in sustainable ways.

Notable Canta mention

This month PJH was lucky enough to get a mention in a recent edition of Canta, quoted as the “beloved Puaka-James library”. It’s always great to be reminded that the students do think fondly of our libraries!

2022 UC Library Survey NOW LIVE!

Kia ora koutou!

The 2022 Library Survey is now officially LIVE! The survey is open today and will continue for 4 weeks until the 15th of October (unless extended for sample size). The Library survey aims to collect information from UC staff, students (distance and on campus), and visitors about the library services we offer, how they use the library and what is most important to them. This survey will also help to promote some of the services they don’t know about yet and might like to use.

We’re trying to get as much engagement as possible this year, so please encourage all students, staff, and visitors to fill in the survey, if you can! (Please also see Juliet’s recent email re: our survey email signature, which you can incorporate into your own work signature, or a shared inbox signature). We also have stations set up at each library for people to use if they don’t have access to their own device.

Below is the blurb students will see and the prizes they can win for participating – please feel free to share with your networks!

“SPEAK UP and WIN! UC Library want to TUNE IN to your library-related needs! Fill in our 2022 Survey here https://bit.ly/LibrarySurvey22 and BE HEARD! Tell us what you love, what you don’t love, and what you want to see in the future – we want to HEAR YOUR VOICE! Fill in the survey and go in the draw to win 1 of 2 UE Booms! We also have weekly spot prizes up for grabs including Sony Bluetooth headphones, JBL Bluetooth earbuds, and more!”

Also, just a reminder that LIBRARY STAFF ARE ELIGIBLE TO ENTER THE PRIZE DRAW TOO!

If you receive any Survey enquiries, please feel free to forward these to library@canterbury.ac.nz and/or contact the Survey project team (Isabella Stainthorpe, Juliet Lackersteen, Margaret Paterson, Sarah Johnston), or our project lead (Dale Wang).

Ngā mihi,
