A few of us will be wearing our red UC Puna “ask us” tees. We have plenty spare, and Juliet has kindly offered to wash them if anyone else would like to wear one on the day –  if you would like one, please let Juliet know by Wednesday so she can organise this. Thanks Juliet!

Keenious research explorer tool now LIVE!

Kia ora koutou!

Keenious has officially gone live! Please see below for some of our messaging to students and the wider University community.

Discover relevant research to any document with Keenious!

What is Keenious?

Keenious is a research tool which analyses your document with artificial intelligence, and returns a list of research articles and topics that are highly relevant to what your document is about. In other words, Keenious is a search tool that uses natural language processing “AI” to search for literature by analysing your writing. It can analyse a whole document or a selected part of the document to search. Keenious has add-ons for both Microsoft Word and Google Docs. Keenious should be used as an additional tool to search for literature along with traditional databases.

Setting up Keenious with Word and Google Docs

Keenious is freely accessible to all UC students and staff. The add-on may already appear in Microsoft Word if you are signed in with your UC account or you can add it yourself. You can also add to Google Docs yourself. Keenious have easy to follow instructions for adding it to Word on their help page and the process is similar for Google Docs.

Please put in a support request to the University’s IT in the UC Services Portal if you have trouble getting Keenious working in Word, or browse Keenious’s tips on adding Keenious to Microsoft Word on their website.

Searching with Keenious

To start using Keenious for searching, after installing the add-on for either Microsoft Word or Google Docs, open the add-on. The Keenious side panel will appear. Now you can either search based on the entire document or select just a part of text to search on. Click the ‘Research Articles’ to begin searching. For more information on searching with Keenious, including options for refining your search, see their expanding set of help articles here.

Full-Text Access

Once you’ve found a publication you wish to view, the easiest way to access the full-text is by clicking on the ‘Access Full-Text’ button (if you’re signed up with your UC email it will direct you to the library). Alternatively, you can click on the DOI to be directed to the publication itself and then access it via the library.

Exporting Citations

When you’ve found a publication you want to use, remember to reference it fully. By clicking on the quotation marks (“) at the top right of the Keenious panel a reference will be generated in the style you choose. You can copy paste this to your bibliography or download the reference to later import to your preferred reference management tool. Export as an RIS file for EndNoteZoteroMendeley or similar tools. BibTeX is also available for those using LaTeX.

Subject librarian help is available here and more info about the Keenious tool can be found here.

We need you! Rā Tōmene | Open Day 2022

Kia ora koutou!

It’s that time of year again! We’re looking for volunteers to help with our Rā Tōmene | Open Day stall on Friday 9 September (10am-2pm).

Event Info:

Rā Tōmene | Open Day 2022 will be taking place on Friday 9 September. This is our key recruitment event for future students, parents and whānau, and its success depends on staff throughout UC.

Library activations:

  • PUNA Stall – a stall located in the Open Day market with other UC teams. The stall is a chance to engage with a wide range of people interested in UC as a place of study. If you would like to help out on the stall, please add your name to a slot (or two!) in the roster sheet saved on the K:drive here: K:\Operations\Marketing\Events&Promotions\Open Day Rā Tōmene\Open Day Rā Tōmene 2022\Open Day Puna Stall Roster_2022.docx
  • PUNA Passport – the passport is a great way to promote the libraries and encourage people to visit our space. Each entrant will pick up their passport from the stall and will need to visit each library (including Te Rua Makerspace) to receive a sticker, then they will need to place their completed entry into the prize draw. More info about prizes TBC!
  • PUNA Lounge – an oasis behind Te Rua. The Lounge is a space for parents and whānau to take a break and rest their feet. Water and peelable fruit will be available and the lounge will also have Library or UC info/material to support the recruitment goal.

Library Stall UCSA Winter Wellness Expo 2022

Kia ora koutou,

Thank you to everyone who supported the Library’s stall at the 2022 UCSA Winter Wellness Expo that was held in Haere-roa on Thursday! Despite the weather it was a great day, and we managed to engage with over 300 students! For those of you who missed it, here are some highlights!

The events team planned two competitions to run on the day. One of these was a ‘guess how many sour patch kids are in the jar’ competition. For this competition, the closest guess won the jar of sour patch kids (our winner actually guessed the EXACT number of sour patch kids!). Overall, we received 123 entries for this competition! The second competition running on the day was designed to boost our followers on social media. To enter, each person needed to scan our QR code, enter their UC username, and then follow us on at least one of our social media platforms. Three winners were randomly picked out of all the entries, and each winner received a wellness pack which contained some yummy goodies and healthy wellness treats, as well as a UC branded item. Overall, we received 140 entries for this competition! For general giveaways (freebies), we had badges and scrunchies made in the Te Rua Makerspace, which were snapped up! We also set up a variety of collateral for people to take, including the 2022 Library brochure, Library postcards, manaakitanga info sheets, and Te Rua invitations.

Having the Library’s presence at the Winter Wellness expo was a great opportunity to engage with students and remind them that we’re always here to help – we received lots of enquiries from curious students about Te Rua Makerspace, as well. It was also fantastic to network with similar UC departments. Overall, it was a very successful day!

We want YOU!…for the UCSA Winter Wellness Expo!

Kia ora koutou,

The annual UCSA Winter Wellness Expo is coming up and the events team are looking for volunteers to help engage with students at our stall! We would love to have staff from any facet of the Library involved with this event. It’s a great opportunity for us to engage with the new student cohort (including our new International students) and show them all the great things the Library has to offer.

What should I talk about with students?

Good pātai! Primarily, we want to let students know we’re here for them, and to promote our services. For example, telling students about our 3 Library locations, Subject Librarian help, AskLIVE, and the Te Rua Makerspace are a great place to start! They may also have some questions of their own that they’d like to ask us about! We will also be promoting our competitions/giveaways on the day.

We’re glad to have you onboard! Please add your name to your preferred timeslot(s) in the Word doc saved on the K:drive here:
