May 2022 marketing and engagement highlights

Tēnā koutou katoa,

Please enjoy the marketing team’s April-May highlights!

UChess in the library

The library will welcome UCSA affiliated club ‘UChess’ into the library in the coming weeks. UChess will be using part of the nook behind Te Rua makerspace to facilitate drop-in chess sessions on Monday afternoons between 2-6pm for the next few months. This is a great opportunity and will hopefully lead to more positive engagement with the library.

Pink Shirt Day Friday 20 May

Kia ora koutou,

A reminder that Pink Shirt Day (PSD) is this coming Friday (20 May) and we will be taking a staff photo for those who are keen!

Join us on Friday 20 May as we Kōrero Mai, Kōrero Atu, Mauri Tū, Mauri Ora – Speak Up, Stand Together, Stop Bullying!

Celebrated annually around the globe, PSD began in Canada in 2007 when two students took a stand against homophobic bullying, after a peer was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. In Aotearoa, PSD works to create schools, workplaces, communities and whānau where everyone feels safe, valued and respected.

Please consider wearing something pink on Friday, or pop into Te Rua to make your own PSD badge! Also, make sure to check out the awesome PSD display outside room 224 on level 2 (PJH) and grab a PSD sticker!

For those interested in joining the photo, please wear something pink and meet in the PJH workroom at 2pm on Friday!

Puaka-James Hight: Open Christchurch Architectural Festival 2022

For the second year in a  row, our very own Puaka-James Hight building was showcased to the public over the weekend as part of the 2022 Open Christchurch architectural festival. For those of you who may not have come across this event, Open Christchurch is a free, one-weekend-only festival of exceptional architecture. The participating buildings were open to everyone in Ōtautahi Christchurch on Saturday 30 April and Sunday 1 May (UC participated on Sunday only). The full programme for the Open Christchurch festival can be viewed here.

In total, 35 individual groups equalling approximately 90 people came through to explore our 53-metre-tall beacon of brutalism. The team (Hui, Isabella, Libby, Zahra, and Zina) greeted visitors, answered questions, and gave on-demand guided tours for those who wanted them. A self-guided tour option was also available and proved to be a highly popular choice for those who wished to explore the building on their own. A display showcasing the architecture, construction, and library history – featuring archival material from our Macmillan Brown Library and 3D printed models of PJH made in Te Rua makerspace – was erected in the space between the lifts on level 2 of Puaka-James Hight library. Postcards, bookmarks, badges, and stickers featuring Puaka-James Hight were given away as souvenirs of the event. For those who could not make it in-person, an online collection of Puaka-James Hight-themed items from MB’s archives were available to view on the Kā kohika website.

Overall, the day went smoothly, and it was very rewarding to see past students, and children of past students, reminisce on their time spent in our library, describing what it was like in their day. Comments from guests included “great job on the display” “love the postcards” and “you have done a great job!”. One family shared a heart-warming story of farewelling a family member (who had worked at in the library) the very same day as the Open Chch event. They commented that it was very special to see where their father/grandfather had once worked on the day they were saying goodbye. A very special guest who also came to see the building was one of the original architects from the Ministry of Works team that designed the building, Brian Koller. Brian is pictured below (front left) with the other designers in celebration of the NZIA Enduring Architect Award, which is part of the display on level 2.

While the building itself has undergone various changes over the years since its construction between 1969-1974, the overall consensus of those attending the event was that many fond memories are associated with Puaka-James Hight building. We plan to run this event again in future to facilitate the continuation of these lovely memories.

The Te Rua Makerspace received a positive review from the UCSA President in an email to all students earlier this month, providing great exposure for the space. Te Rua Makerspace

Te Rua staff have been busy assembling craft bags for the care packs  provided to the hundreds of students isolating with Covid-19. To date, over 1000 craft packs have been sent out to isolating students. This was a fabulous opportunity for the makerspace team to engage with a large captive audience who may not have had much interaction with Te Rua before. Makerspace staff hope to have plenty of interested students check out Te Rua in person when they have fully recovered!

Design work

Newly designed UC Puna postcards were printed, and dispatched to each library this month. Each of the five unique designs were taken from the art and archive collections at Macmillan Brown library. The postcards are available for anyone to collect, and have been very popular already. Thanks to Zina for her amazing mahi!

2022 UC Puna postcard designs

The marketing team created a new welcome banner design. The banner includes vibrant images of all three libraries, which were designed by our very own graphic designer, Ryan!

Earlier this year Ryan initiated a ‘kupu of the week’ segment on the library’s Facebook page. This great initiative celebrates the use of te reo Māori in an engaging library-related context. Ka rawe Ryan!

Herea tō waka (O’Day) summary

Tēnā koutou i tēnei ahiahi!

This week the University has celebrated the return of students back to study following the summer break, and on Friday 18th (O’Day) we welcomed the 2022 UC cohort into our libraries!

Due to current Covid-19 restrictions, this herea tō waka (O’Day) was quite different compared to previous years. There was no Ori-market, so instead we set up a self-service information table on level 2 of PJH with handy resources for students to browse and collect as they ventured into the library. The resources included printed Puna passports, Te Rua invites, 2022 library guides, manaakitanga library-info handouts, the newly designed postcards, and a bowl of badges that were made in Te Rua. Around the table we had a labelled box for Puna passport entries, the newly designed UC Puna banner, and a mannequin displaying a UC hoodie which was up for grabs. A small selection of collateral was also made available at both EPS and MB libraries (both libraries had the new banner as well). These resources will remain on the table for students to browse and take over the next few weeks, and will be part of the library’s broader induction phase for new-to-UC students (stay tuned!).

Although we weren’t able to gather engagement stats from the Ori-market stall as we normally would, we were able to estimate levels of engagement by counting the number of Puna passports that were taken by students. For this challenge, students were required to visit all 3 UC libraries (plus the Te Rua Makerspace) to collect a unique sticker from each location. Once submitted, they would go in the draw to win 1 of 5 UC branded hoodies – this challenge was aimed at helping students familiarise themselves with our libraries and so they would know where to find them once semester began! In total, 200 passports were printed and dispatched to each library.  To date, 160  passports have been taken, and 40 are leftover (15 at MB, 15 at EPS, and 10 at PJH) – several passports have even been submitted already! The Puna passport challenge will run for several weeks into semester so 500 more passports have been ordered from UC Print. Once the challenge has ended, the winners will be drawn and contacted about their prize. Overall it was a successful day!

If you’re working on campus, you’re welcome to pop down and check out the Puna passports, stickers, postcards etc. (which were designed in-house by our creative team members – ka rawe!).

‘Can Your Fines’ donation to Chch City Mission

The library’s annual fines amnesty period ‘Can Your Fines’ has ended for 2021. A total of 117 cans were donated by UC staff and students (96 cans from PJH, 12 from EPS, and 9 from MB). Each can of food was worth $5 of fines, thus the combined value of all the donated cans was equivalent to $585 worth of fines! This year we had fewer can donations compared to previous years, however this is likely because library fines had been turned off  in the lead up to the amnesty period, due to the recent August/September Covid-19 lockdown.  All 117 cans will be donated to the Christchurch City Mission’s foodbank next week.

ka mau te wehi/awesome!

UC Library Social Media Team Winners at UCSA Student Choice Awards 2021

Kia ora tātou,

I am delighted to announce that the UC library social media team won the ‘Social Media Superstar’ Award at the 2021 UCSA Student Choice Awards on Friday evening!

The library social media team were nominated by current UC students, and were selected as finalists by the judging committee.  Juliet, Rā, and Isabella attended the ceremony and accepted the award on behalf of the team. The award was presented by a student who had made a nomination, making the night even more special.

This award is a wonderful acknowledgment of the hard mahi that the team have put in over the past several years to deliver meaningful and engaging content to a wide-ranging student audience across our social media platforms. We are very honoured to receive a nomination from our students, let alone to be presented with an award.

Ka mau te wehi!

On behalf of the UC Library Social Media Team,

Isabella
