Endnote

The Bibliographic Management Software review group would like to review the information on the Endnote Wiki and organise Endnote refresher sessions for interested librarians.

We would therefore be keen to know:
*Problems students and staff have with Endnote
*Hints or tips that would make it easier for users to have trouble-free use of Endnote
*Things that you have trouble with or have difficulty resolving for your customers
*Anything else you can think of that will make it easier to use or support Endnote

Please post your ideas here, or email me if you’d prefer.
Thanks, Caroline S

PS We’d also love to hear from you if you’d like to be involved in updating the Endnote Wiki or in organising the refresher sessions 🙂

Ukulele group

Do you fancy playing the ukulele? Are you already playing and would like to join a group?
We’re wondering if there are enough people who are interested to form a group or just get together casually at lunchtimes. We’re thinking fun rather than serious so you wouldn’t need to be an expert (or even have played at all yet). If you’re interested, post here or email me, or Kathryn Andrews. 🙂 Caroline S

Māori language picture books in the Education Library

Kia ora koutou
The Māori language picture books have been moved from the Picture Book collection to the Māori Classroom collection (tclm) where they sit at the front before the Dewey numbers start (thanks very much to the person who shuffled the books on the shelves so they would fit in). I have also moved the few bilingual picture books there. The spine labels say (Edu) Maori CM AAA etc.
Gerald Whitla has kindly added a note to the record of each book, in both the Māori and English version, pointing to its matching pair. There is also a note inside the cover of each book, doing the same thing.
I am hoping that this will make these books more visible to our students.

Māori language picture books

I’m moving the Māori language picture books into the Māori classroom collection. So far I’ve moved just a few- those that are only available in te reo Māori (or at least, only available in the Education Library in te reo Māori). They are at the very front of the Māori classroom collection. Their collection code is now tclm. I will move the rest there sometime after the 14th Nov. Caroline S

Junior and Young Adult fiction with Māori themes

Kia ora koutou
We have had a few queries lately about fiction with a Māori theme. I’ve created a list of titles and am keen to have reviews/recommendations/criticism/additions to help create a final list. I’ve put the list at File://Q:\CarolineS\MaoriJuvenileFiction.doc so please add any comments that you’d like to. There isn’t a tight timeframe for this so if you fancy adding Junior/YA fiction to your Christmas holiday reading, that would be great.
Thanks Caroline S

APA for Acts and regulations

Hi all. We’ve had several enquiries about referencing regulations lately which has prompted me to look at our “Act of Parliament” APA page. After looking at various other University sites and the APA manual, and discussions with John A, I would like to propose that we change it to:

Acts of Parliament (Statutes) and Regulations

In-text

Give the name of the Act or regulation including the year, e.g.

According to the Education (Registration of Early Childhood Services Teachers) Regulations 2004

OR
… violence against that person by any other person with whom that person is, or has been, in a domestic relationship (Domestic Violence Act 1995)

Reference List

Give the name of the Act or regulation including the year , e.g.

Children, Young Persons, and Their Families Act 1989.
OR
Education (Registration of Early Childhood Services Teachers) Regulations 2004.

For electronic versions, add a retrieval statement with the URL of the entry page of the web site, e.g. Care of Children Act 2004. Retrieved from http://www.legislation.govt.nz

If referring to a particular part of an Act or of a regulation include that information in the In-text Citiation only. A part of an Act is indicated by s. and a part of a regulation by reg. The part referred to should come first, following the pattern “[part] of the [Act or regulation]”, e.g.

… s. 13(b) of the Children, Young Persons, and Their Families Act 1989…
OR
Section 13(b) of the Children, Young Persons, and Their Families Act 1989…
OR
… reg. 2(1) of the Education (Registration of Early Childhood Services Teachers) Regulations 2004…

Note:
APA provides some flexibility in how to cite legal material so other versions of these references may also be acceptable.

For simplicity these guidelines have been adapted from the New Zealand Law Style Guidelines

If writing for overseas journals, consult the APA publication manual for more details.

All comments and discussion appreciated. Caroline S

TEPS301 Breastfeeding reference

Kia ora koutou There have been a couple of enquiries about this. In case there are more, here is the correct reference (thank you John for your corrections):
Bartle, C., & Duncan, J. (2009). Ten steps for the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding in early childhood. Consultation document distributed to the early childhood sector before submission to the Ministry of Health. Retrieved from http://www.learn.canterbury.ac.nz/
