central items not truncating to patron expiry date

Hi all

As a result of extending due dates of central items out to cover the time central is closed this summer – central item due dates are not truncating to borrower expiry dates. Renewals on central items will also renew until Central is open again. People with expired records won’t be able to issue any new items and shouldn’t be able to renew any issued to them.

At the moment (and up to when the central library opens again) there will be a few people with items out past the time when their record expires (people with expired records won’t be able to issue any new items). I am checking for these daily, and will be editing due dates back according to the borrower’s expiry date. Due to the numbers/time involved we (eservices) have elected not to contact each borrower and alert them – we figured that the pre-overdue notice should give them enough warning to be able to return items (as with recalls).
You may, therefore, get a few questions from concerned borrowers.
Most affected borrowers are temporary staff so won’t be fined but you may want to be lenient with students who haven’t got the message about their item due dates being edited back.

Kind Regards,

Romy

Dynamic pages being relinked

Relinking of webapps from the old web server to the new virtual server continues. From today, we’ll be updating the links for dynamic web pages (biblioplus). Please report any problems to Library eServices.

For those of you with dynamic pages linked from LibGuides, we’ll need you to check for any remaining old links on your pages and update them. Instructions will follow in the near future.

Thanks,
Donna

Horizon Reports, etc, moving to virtual server

From Monday, we will begin updating the links for all Webapps reports and programs from the old web server to a virtual server. Webapps includes Horizon Reports found on Camelot, and programs such as Biblioplus, the New Titles List and the Room Booking system, as well as anything else with a link beginning with “http://webapps.libr.canterbury.ac.nz”. Initially we will begin working only on internal library staff reports, such as Horizon Reports.

Webapps reports on the new server will be identified by links in the format “http://library.canterbury.ac.nz/webapps/”, and eventually the old links will no longer be accessible. We will be working to update all links on the website and the wiki, and may require assistance to identify and update links within LibGuides. If you have been provided with a report link for your own individual use at some point in the past and you want to continue using it, then please email us to let us know.

If you encounter any problems running the relinked reports, please report them to Library eServices, including the link that you used to access the program, any error messages you received, and the steps taken to get to the error message.

As this process will happen in stages over a period of time, we will continue to post updates about which area is being worked on, and where potential problems might be encountered.

Teaching Summon for First Year Students

As libraries adopt discovery services they are finding that the impact of introducing this new technology spans far beyond the normal updating of instruction materials, websites, research guides. Web-scale discovery provides an opportunity for libraries to re-think and re-tool their research instruction to focus less on “searching” and more on helping students evaluate results and develop critical thinking skills.

In this upcoming session, Barbara Coat (Liaison and Academic Support Coordinator in the Office of Library Services at Charles Darwin University) shares how usage of the Summon service in instruction at CDU helps students learn about library resources and critical concepts behind effective search.
Register using the link below and we’ll send you the recording if you can’t make it.

It doesn’t always take anything particularly clever or advanced to really make an impact. Often, persistence and prevalence is the key to making a lasting impression. At Charles Darwin University, they incorporate the Summon service into first year instruction, making certain that students know it’s a trusted place to go for research.

a nice bit of positive feedback about AskLive

This just came in from a very happy AskLive user:

“This service is wonderful! Of all the universities services I find this one the most helpful, everyone I talk to always helps me find things that I can’t find on my own and I would have trouble without being able to use this service. Thanks so much, I really appreciate having this available and how friendly and helpful everyone on here is”

They were mostly using AskLive on the weekends, so weekend staff can give yourselves a big pat on the back 🙂
