RIP – Camelot web site ( I hope)

Note: I’ve had to reinstate the Camelot site as there are a number of scripts in areas I didn’t know about that still use Camelot files. However, I may be taking it down again as these are fixed, so the following will still apply at some stage.

I believe (hope) that I have done all the last bits of work that were needed to enable us to put the old Camelot web site out of its misery, and kill off all the last files on the server. Camelot wiki is of course still working, and all the dynamic pages (reports, forms etc) should have been retemplated so they no longer use styles and images from the old Camelot web site.

However, as there could well be last traces that I haven’t identified, I haven’t actually deleted the files on the server – just renamed the folder, so it could be reinstated very easily.

Please let Library IT know if you find something that no longer works as you think it should, or looks untemplated, and we’ll investigate either retemplating it, or reinstating the folder name until we decide how to fix it.

All my fingers and toes are crossed that this won’t be necessary.

Library website to be frozen next week

This is a preliminary warning that early next week the Library’s website will be frozen, meaning that for the time it is frozen, any updates will have to come through Library IT. This is so we can start the retemplating process, which will be finalised early next year. In practical terms, this means that access to the local version of the website (O:/Baldrick) will be limited to Library IT – no-one else will be able to access, edit and upload these pages. There will still be full access to the subject pages on LibGuides.

The retemplating will be a gradual process, beginning with all the pages that have .shtml at the end of the url. Most of the dynamic pages (have .php at the end of the url), such as the lists of databases, will be done at a later stage.

If you have any major updating to do, please do it this week, or leave it until the site is unfrozen early next year. If this is going to cause difficulties, please contact me ASAP.

Changes to Course Administration program

As part of retemplating remaining Camelot pages that are created by programs, I’ve been discovering a number of scripts that are named as if they belong to the course admin process, but in fact don’t appear to be used.

To see if they are still needed or not, I’ve renamed them on the server. If they’re not used this won’t matter – if they are, they’ll break the course admin process.

If you are trying to create, or alter courses using the Course Administration program, and something breaks, please email Library IT, or phone us if it is urgent, and we’ll reinstate the files ASAP.

New photos on the phone list

The Library staff phone list is now displaying new and larger photos, taken from the K drive. This means that if you view the phone list in Firefox, you won’t be able to click on them to view them immediately as was possible before, as they are now files on a local directory, and not part of the old Camelot website. See Opening local files from Firefox.

Note, some staff members don’t have a link to their photo beside their name, and others are unavailable or missing. These will gradually be added, as and when possible.

If you find any photos that don’t display correctly, or are incorrect, please let Library IT know.

New Summon features and content

From Serials Solutions:

Product features/capabilities

• Last week we released a major relevance enhancement that returns more precise results for queries that otherwise might be overly stemmed, for phrase queries that are not bounded by quotation marks, and for better handling of British vs. American spelling differences.
– Here are some queries that will help show off these new enhancements:
• Journaling (stemming—so you don’t see results with “journal” and “journalist”)
• Time to market (phrases with stop words)
• Fibre optics (British vs. American spelling)

• We have also made back-end enhancements to the service that will allow us to keep the index more current, including daily updates of catalog records and appropriate subscription content, such as newspaper articles.

Content

• MLA! The Modern Language Association, which this week agreed to add its renown MLA International Bibliography to the Summon service. Compiled by the staff of the MLA Office of Bibliographic Information Services with the cooperation of more than 100 contributing bibliographers in the United States and abroad, it presently includes over 2.2 million records with 72,000 books and articles added annually.
Also coming on board:
– Atlantic Media, with such prestigious publications as The Atlantic, National Journal, and Government Executive
– ICFAI University Press, representing 22 high quality Indian business journals
– Neilsen Business Media, covering key industries from entertainment to marketing
– New Zealand Ecological Society publications and journals
– Queensland Nurses Union publications
– Universidad Complutense de Madrid, with 72 Spanish titles
– White Horse Press, a Cambridge UK-based publisher of books and journals on environmental and social issues

Your feedback required – retemplating Library website

The Library’s website will be retemplated over the summer, in line with the rest of the University. I’m working with the UC web team at the moment to redesign the homepage in the new wider template, and set up the underlying pages. We are now at the point where we are seeking feedback from the rest of the Library.

Could you please look at the mockup of the proposed homepage and the About the Library page using the new template for lower level pages. This latter page will also work via the link from the proposed homepage, but no other links will work yet. Please let us know what you think of these pages via comments on this posting.

Note that the 2 search boxes are not in their final form yet. It is likely that for 2010 these will be the new Summon Search (whatever it is called) followed Catalogue Quick Search as it is now.

Opening links in Outlook 2007

A few people have mentioned that they don’t like using ctrl + click to open hyperlinks from emails. This can be switched off, but be aware that this will also apply to links in Word documents since Word is now the editor for emails in Outlook.

To switch off this setting:

– Open Word and click the Offi ce Button (top left circular button)
– Click Word Options (button at the bottom of the menu)
– Choose Advanced from the left-hand bar
– Uncheck “Use Ctrl + Click to follow hyperlink”
