New report listing library classes/tutorials running “today”

Hi all

Due to popular demand we have created a report that lists library classes/tutorials running “today”, in order for frontline staff to be able to assist registrants with directions to rooms etc.
The report (there is a version for public courses e.g. library101 and other open courses and a version for staff only courses e.g. staff development). The reports can be accessed from the wiki page http://wiki.canterbury.ac.nz/display/LIBRSTAFF/Library+Classes+-+Reports (also on the Horizon reports page – User Services section). Any sessions running on the day will show up and stay up for the whole day (on the library course booking page courses disappear from the list if the session has started).

Kind Regards,

Romy (on behalf of e-services)

Using characters with macrons in Counterculture posts

This is a tip that has come out of the Access & Description of Māori Resources forum this morning. To get macrons to display correctly on Counterculture (and the Web in general), replace the character with one of the following codes:

Ā – Ā
ā – ā
Ē – Ē
ē – ē
Ī – Ī
ī – ī
Ō – Ō
ō – ō
Ū – Ū
ū – ū

For example, Māori would be written as M&amp#257;ori (and then the browser should display it correctly). Again, this will be affected by different systems/fonts, etc, but this will be more effective than copying and pasting from Word.

The list can be found on Camelot: Guidelines for News on Counterculture.

LibGuides Upgrade

Attention LibGuides owners and editors!

We will be upgrading to Version 2 of LibGuides during April. Fortunately, most of the migration work will be done by Springshare (the LibGuides support team), but there are some areas that will need your attention. This would also be a good time to do a general tidy up of your guides. Please read the following carefully.

From now until Easter: Pre-migration clean-up

Please check through your content on LibGuides and delete any content/guides that are no longer required. Fix any broken links – eServices have requested a broken links report and will post it to Counterculture when it’s available. It would also be very wise to make a backup of your site content (find this under the Guide Settings menu).

Wednesday 8th April: Migration from Version 1 to Version 2 beta site

Do not log into LibGuides on this day. All guides and accounts from the current version of LibGuides will be migrated over to our Version 2 site. We have been advised not to log into both Version 1 and Version 2 for the entire day, as it could cause problems with the migration.

Thursday 9th April – Friday 24th April: Readying the Version 2 site to go live

This is the time to do any tidying of the new site ready for the switchover (the Version 1 site will remain as the live site until we are ready). Please note that any changes you want to make live during this time will need to be duplicated on both sites.

We are aiming to go live with Version 2 by Tuesday 28th April (start of term 2). This will give us just over 2 weeks to get the site ready. While we don’t anticipate any problems, there will be a bit of tidying up to do. These are the sorts of tasks we should be focussing on during this time:

  • Checking that all the content has migrated successfully
  • Making sure all links work
  • Assigning guides to the appropriate subjects/topics
  • Creating/updating your new profile page

There are also some box types that will not migrate: user submitted links; feedback; surveys; table of contents. If you’ve used any of these boxes and you want to keep them, you will need to re-create them in the version 2 site using alternative methods.

Also, if you are going to be away on leave throughout this time, please let eServices know so that we can set up your account ahead of time and assign someone else to check through your guides.

Workshop sessions

We will be advertising some workshops where you can come and learn about the changes in version 2 and work on your guides with assistance on hand. Keep an eye on Counterculture for dates and times.

Further info

You can have a look at the UC Library beta site here: http://canterbury.beta.libguides.com/. If you want to learn a bit more about using Version 2, you might like to browse through the Springshare guide: http://support.springshare.com/libguides.

If you have any further questions about the upgrade, please contact Library eServices or talk to one of the members of the LibGuides Review group: Coral Black, Sara Roberts, Damian Cairns, Alison Johnston, and Donna Barber.

ITS report problems with Network/File storage

ITS have just sent through the following communication:

“We are currently experiencing performance issues on computers as result of a problem with our file server. This means that staff and students may be experiencing issues saving and accessing files, running applications, and logging on or off.

We are putting all resource into this issue and we will provide another update when we have more information, or the problem is resolved.

We apologise for any inconvenience these issues may be causing.”

Problems with etxts – could be some delays

Hi all

ITS have just sent us the following information:

“We are having some issues with the modems used to send txt messages from UCTxt being unresponsive.
We are currently configuring messages sent to etxt to queue so they should get sent eventually once things are back up and running.”

This could mean some delays in our etxts getting to borrowers (particularly hourly overdue texts), and possibly some “old” information eventually being sent out.

We’ll let you know when ITS have fixed the problem.

Kind Regards,

Romy (on behalf of e-services)

Address Label and old batch Spine Label program not working due to K drive changes.

Hi all

With the recent K drive change, if you had shortcuts to the batch spine label program or the address label program, they’ll now no longer be working.

We now have a slightly different way of storing these programs, so if you do need them, please contact e-services and we’ll organize to install the new versions of the program(s) on your computer.
We have installed the address label program on the distance postage/processing PC at Education (C061IL) today.

Kind Regards,

Romy (on behalf of e-services)

Problems with keyword searches in the catalogue

We’re currently having problems with keyword searches in the catalogue (including course code searches). We’ll try to do what we can to fix the problem without taking the catalogue down, as we don’t want to impact any classes that might be happening today. If you have examples that you want to show in tutorials, please check that they’re working beforehand. Very recent titles are more likely to be missing from the index that older titles.

We’ll update when we have more information.
