New home page for Subject Guides via LibGuides

The layout of Subject Guides homepage on Libguides is now updated to what was agreed upon at the meeting on Tuesday 21st April. See Heather’s summary.

The only slight modification is to the Featured Guides box – in the mockup it looked as if we could have 5 guides featured at any one time while still allowing for the tags box below to be visible on most screen, but in the live version we only have room to feature 3 guides.

There are only 2 guides left to be fully published in LibGuides, and these should be ready this afternoon. Once these are completed the link to subject guides that is on every page on the Library’s website will be changed to go to the homepage on LibGuides.

Any questions or comments ASAP, either here or to Library IT

Statistics for Subject Guides on LibGuides

I’ve just added a new category to the Statistics page on Camelot – statistics for hits on our subject guides now hosted on LibGuides.

These are displayed as the number of hits by subject guide by month. This is the total number of hits on all pages (tabs and subtabs) on each guide. It does also include hits on unpublished and test ones like “Catherine’s experimental page” which should mostly be ignored. You can also see the most popular 10 guides on the Subject Guides homepage on LibGuides.

Authors can see more detail about hits on their own guides by looking at the Usage & Statistics tab. You can see hits by each page within your guide.

Verifying bug to watch out for

There is a bug in the UC People & Research Database that results in your department being added to the department list of records when you edit records as part of the verification process. So, if you’re verifying records over the next few days, could you please make sure your department is removed from the department tab at the end of the editing process.

Fingers crossed, this should be cleared up swiftly – I’ll post an update when the problem has been resolved.

Grant.

Adding anchors in LibGuides pages

I’ve been asked to put up some instructions for creating anchors in LibGuides. I do suggest that you use them sparingly – if your page is only about 2 screens in length they are probably unnecessary and just added clutter, and if your page is longer than that, you might want to consider dividing it into shorter pages.

However, there may be times when you want anchors, so this is how you create them.

It’s a 2 step process.

First you have to create an anchor in the box that you want to link to from the top list.

1) To do this click on edit text in the target box.
2) In the second line of the menu bar you’ll see an icon for an anchor. Click on this.
3) An “insert/edit anchor” box will appear. Give your anchor a name – very brief, one word, but something reasonably descriptive.
4) Click on insert.

Then go to where you want the link to this box to appear

1) Create an html link in the usual way.
2)The url for the link should start with a # followed by the name of the anchor eg #myanchor. You don’t need anything else (no http:// etc).

image loader fixed in LibGuides

You may have noticed that the image uploader in LibGuides was not working. It ishould be now – let me know if you are still having problems accessing it.

It is part of a LibGuides add-on that we would have to purchase – apparently it was available for a time as a trial, and we missed the messages that said the free trial was about to end. SpringShare have very generously allowed us more time to evaluate whether we want to purchase it or not.

It may be that we change the way we manage images in LibGuides, but if that happens, we’ll give you plenty of notice and instructions on what to do.
