All Libraries category – suggested change in name

Categories in Counterculture were set up so that there was a category for each branch, and another category “All Libraries” which is supposed to be used for postings that are relevant to all branches.

However, this name “All Libraries” has always caused some confusion, and I’ve had more comments about how confusing that is with the changeover to Camelot news. It is difficult to understand the difference between All Libraries (a specific category, different from all other categories) and All postings, which isn’t a category as such, but a link created by the blogs software that allows to you see all postings regardless of category.

To try to overcome this confusion, it has been suggested that we change the name of the “All Libraries” category to “Library Wide”. This will also change where this category appears in the list, as it is ordered alphabetically.

I’ve also just changed where the All postings link appears on Counterculture, so that it now appears at the top of the list of categories. I could also do this for other blogs if that was considered desirable.

Please note: As I’m away on leave after Friday, I’d like to make this change before I go on leave, so any comments need to be made before tomorrow afternoon.

Answering telephones

Recently LLT has discussed some issues to do with telephone use by Library staff.

The business of the Library is carried out by an increasing number of communication devices. These still include the telephone, and there are over 120 phones in the Library, often with personal voicemail attached.

All Library staff are expected to answer a telephone that rings – in person whenever possible – rather than letting it go to voicemail. If required, group pickup can be set up for a group of telephones.

It is also important for the professional image of the Library that staff answering telephones clearly identify who they are – a personal name is best.

For cases when a call needs to be tranferred to another extension, please tell the caller the extension number they are being transferred to. Any staff requiring training in how to transfer calls should speak with their manager or supervisor.

These may seem very obvious points of telephone etiquette, but they are not being carried out consistently by all staff.

new Fixed category added to Counterculture

I’ve just added a new category “Fixed” into Counterculture.

This is for all those “it’s broken”, or “there’s a problem with …” postings, after they are fixed. This way they can be cleared out of other categories, but still be available for later reference. They won’t display on the new Camelot page.

So if you are putting up an “it’s broken”, or “there’s a problem with …” posting, please put it in the relevant Library category to begin with, but once the problem is fixed, put a comment on the posting saying so, but also edit the original posting to change the category to Fixed. See also instructions on how to edit a posting.
