SPAM emails from Nucleus blogs

Hi all

Some of you may’ve been receiving SPAM emails from our blogs (Library News, Counterculture, Suggestion Board).
These emails contain the line

“A message sent to you by an anonymous visitor (Posted from a Nucleus weblog at http://library.canterbury.ac.nz/blogs/)”

Followed by some text supposedly about a blog posting.

They are all from email addresses with “string of numbers” @gmail/yahoo e.t.c.

Please just delete these emails if you get one. Real responses/comments to our blog posts come to e-services and we’ll forward them on to the appropriate person for response, they won’t come to you directly . Unfortunately we are unable to stop this kind of spam from getting to staff, in this case the emails are harmless as they are not coming through with any phishing links.

Kind Regards,

Romy

Network problems: Update from IT Services

We are currently experiencing performance issues on computers as result of a problem with our file server. This means that staff and students may be experiencing issues saving and accessing files, running applications, and logging on or off their profiles.

Vendor support has been contacted and we will provide another update when we have more information, or the problem is resolved.

We apologise for any inconvenience these issues may be causing.

e-services have changed the withdrawal consultation program

Hi to all the liaison librarians.

We have made some changes to the withdrawal consultation program – when you log in to the Books Proposed for Withdrawal you should be logged in to the new liaison librarian voting program (title will have the word “new” in brackets). To see the academic view click on the “change and start over” link at the top of the page as per usual. The new program allows you to filter the list (see search options) and also set votes for all items on a page. I’ll send out an email shortly with information and instructions.

If you notice anything odd please report this to e-services.

Cheers,

Romy

What I did at Labour weekend

This is a photo of me and Graeme Bull (histology technician in Biological Sciences), taken by our compadre Prof Phil Bones (Head of Electrical & Computer Engineering) at Labour weekend. We all own places in the same small enclave at French Farm – kind of coincidental considering the three of us work at UC too – and were over there sorting out our shared water problems up the back on the surrounding farm. All of us get our water via a pipe system, connected to a tiny spring up a very steep hill, which had been put out of action during a heavy deluge earlier in the year. The inquisitive cattle (some acting au natural at left of photo) think they own the place, so we went to a lot of trouble driving in stakes around the spring and fencing it with barbed wire (foreground) to keep them out, creating a veritable “Fort Knox” as I somewhat proudly like to call it!

Cheers, Max

High Demand accounts can now request hourly loans

Hi all

Just a heads up to customer services and high demand staff out there.
As of this morning all High Demand borrower accounts can now place requests on hourly loans (you may need to restart Horizon to pick up these changes). The reason we’ve enabled this in Horizon is to allow HD staff to get hold of hourly loans to change the loan period on them in busy times e.g. to change 3h loans to 1h when the items are in high use. It’ll also be handy to try to find missing hourly loans.
As a result, hourly loans may appear on request pull lists and on expired holds reports e.t.c.

The Hold shelf period for hourly loans is the same as for 3day/1day loans (1 day) – hourly loans that go on hold, should be placed wherever any other holds for high demand currently go.

If there is anything strange going on with holds on hourly loans please report this to us and we’ll get right on it.

Kind Regards,

Email may be slow this evening

ICTS are doing some work on the Exchange email server this evening.
Here is their communication on this:

“Between 7.00pm and 9.00pm tonight (20th October 2014) there will be brief periods of email outage or slow performance of the Exchange email servers whilst a critical security patch is applied for the SSL3 vulnerability.

If any issues occur after the patching is completed, please restart the mail client e.g. Outlook. If issues continue after the mail client is restarted, please contact the ICT Service Desk.”

Minisis/ Kā Kohika outages

Hi all

Minisis Inc are currently working on getting Kā Kohika back up and running. As a result people trying to use other Minisis products (M2A, M3, Mint) may find they can’t get in. Looks like the problem with Kā Kohika is taking Minisis longer to fix than they anticipated. We will let everyone know when everything is back to normal.

Thanks for your patience.

No-one in e-services until around 10:30 am tomorrow morning

Hi all

I have a meeting at CPIT tomorrow morning and, as I am the sole e-services staff member tomorrow, this means there’ll be no-one at the office in the morning.
If there’s an emergency between 8:30 and 10:45 tomorrow morning please contact Library Access and Collections who can get in touch with Donna at home (or me, if they can’t get hold of Donna).

Cheers,

Romy

Importance of logging out of AskLIVE outside of service hours

Over the past few months or so there have been a few unanswered queries coming into the AskLIVE queue out-side of official AskLIVE operation hours.

So I thought I’d send out a reminder about the way AskLIVE is set up.
We don’t actually restrict the AskLIVE chat service to the printed hours but, instead, have it set up to show chat as available whenever someone is logged in to the AskLIVE queue. This is so that no chats get cut-off when the service “closes” and so that we can potentially have AskLIVE available outside of normal hours for emergencies e.t.c.

If you do sign in before 9am on weekdays, and 10am on weekends, please make sure you are available to answer any queries OR uncheck the “AskLIVE” queue. To uncheck the queue:
In the old client – go to “Actions” in the top right of the screen then click “select queue” and uncheck AskLIVE and any other queues you are signed in to that you’ll not be checking.
In the new client – click on the “staffing” tab on the left sidebar and uncheck the queues.

Equally, the last person logged in to the AskLIVE queue at the end of the day should log out of AskLIVE. This will be done anyway if you shut down PC’s running AskLIVE, but if you leave your PC/laptop/tablet on, logged in and locked when you go home, please remember to log-out or deselect the AskLIVE (and other active queues) before you go.

Please contact e-services if you have any questions about this.

Kind Regards,

Romy (on behalf of e-services)
