Asian History – DS
The DS call range at Central has been temporarily split. Low use material is being moved down to Level 6 so that academic staff have an opportunity to recommend it for relegation to store or withdrawal. Horizon will be updated as quickly as possible to reflect the progress with the move. Staff will also be moving the DS call range forward on Level 10. The aim is to get all of the DU – DZ and the E call range up on to Level 10 from Level 9 by the end of the term break. Joan
Vacancy – Library Projects Co-ordinator – Fixed term
Expressions of interest – closes on Monday, 8 August 1 pm
Please have a read of the position description for a fixed term role as Library Projects Co-ordinator. This role is to assist with the review of the collections and the move of Education to the Central Library. The position will be paid at Band 4. The step will depend on your current salary and skills. It is preferable to appoint to this fixed term role from within the Library as it gives you an opportunity to experience working on collection projects and managing teams to achieve the goals. Negotiation may be necessary with your current team and it is possible that you might continue with some of your current duties for at least some of the time. There is some flexibility around hours. Your current position will remain for you to return to. We will advertise externally for this role, after 8 August, if necessary. Please contact me or Helen Thomas for further information. The money for this vacancy relates to this financial year which ends on 31 December. In your expression of interest (an email to me is fine) please outline the skills you will bring to the role and what you would hope to achieve if you are appointed. Joan
Position Description
Library Values – rewrite team
Following the three staff sessions to receive feedback on the value statements Caroline Syddall, Fiona Tyson and Lisa Davies have offered to rewrite them. The group have been given all of the feedback received to date and they will be in touch as they make progress. Thank you Lisa, Fiona and Caroline for offering your time and expertise. Joan
Draft Library Values
Thank you to the staff who contributed their feedback at the Values forums this week. Thanks also to Caroline S for encouraging further discussion on Library Values via Counter Culture. For those staff who did not make the session this the draft values are as follows:
We achieve by working together as a trusted partner
We treasure, protect and share knowledge, now and in the future
We listen to you, with courtesy and respect
We value and support our colleagues
We create welcoming spaces that feel like your place
We explore new ideas to develop creative and innovative services
Anne mentioned at all sessions that it had been the aim of the Library to include Māori words, phrases or full translations. However to date we have not been able to achieve this goal. The Library Managers team made the decision to go back to the staff for feedback on the statements above. Once we have agreement on the wording we will move forward again on using English and Māori.
You are welcome to post feedback on counter culture or send me an email with your ideas. Our next step is for a group of staff to be meet who will be given all of the feedback and they will be asked to reword the values statements. Please let me know by Friday 24 June, if you would like to be member of this group. Joan

Level 6 – Central Library – low use history items
Over the last month Academic staff mainly from the History and Classics departments have been making relegation or withdrawal decisions for low use items within the DA-DJ call range. These items had been moved down to Level 6 for them to be considered. Library staff are now packing the relegated items for them to go into an offsite store until level 2 of the Education Library is available for them. Some of the withdrawn items will be in the book giveaway tomorrow and the remainder will be in the next book giveaway which has not been scheduled yet. Any queries please get in touch. Joan
Digitisation Technician – NZMS
https://www.thebigidea.nz/work/207226-digitisation-technician
NZ Micrograhic Services (ChCh) are currently advertising for a Digitisation Technician for a 3mth fixed term contract (possibility of permanent role). I can think of a number of staff who have most of the skills that are noted in the advert. One of the Library’s operational goals is to build the digitization skills within the teams and working within NZMS would be a great opportunity. If you were the successful applicant the Library would support an arrangement where your job was held for you to return eg leave without pay or secondment are two possibilities, provided your team can release you for this length of time. Please talk to your Manager if you intend to apply but hurry as applications close on Friday 27 May. Joan
