Te wiki o te reo Māori starts today. Kia kaha te reo Māori!
I’ll be posting pātai (questions) on counterculture each day of the week. The first person to email me the correct whakautu (answer) will win tiakarete (chocolate).
Today’s pātai:
What is the name of the newly restructured and renamed team at UC led by Darryn Russell (previously known as Office of the AVC Māori, but now including Pasifika and equity portfolios)?
To ensure the tiakarete gets to as many people as possible, I’ll allow one chocolate prize per person. If you win, you can still answer the pātai for the rest of the week but the first person who hasn’t previously won will receive the tiakarete prize.
Remember to give te reo Māori a go this week.
Patua te whakamā!
Karawhiua!
(don’t be shy, and give it heaps!).
You will have heard the sad news of Nekerangi’s passing and we’re receiving many expressions of aroha for him and his whanau.
It feels like MB has lost its most precious tāonga.
Due to covid, there are restrictions on numbers for tangihanga and this will be very difficult for his whanau to manage. We don’t yet know when we will be able to pay our respects, or how many people from UC will be able to go to the marae. A small group may be able to go out tomorrow.
Many of you will be feeling really sad, and you are most welcome to drop in to MB and have a chat with us about your memories of Nekerangi. I am also happy to take cards or written messages or koha to pass on to his whanau. You can pass these on to me or a member of the MB team (no flowers though please).
Take care,
Jo
Kia ora Library Whanau
It’s not long until we begin our Te Wiki o te Reo Māori celebrations (14-20 Mahuru).
One way you can help show your support for te reo is by using these pretty stylish social media tiles provided for free by Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori. They have a range to use on different social media platforms https://www.tewikiotereomaori.co.nz/rauemi/
You can also add them to your email signature. If you don’t already have a signature, go to the file menu in outlook, click options-mail-signatures and create a new signature. Copy the image underneath your text signature (you can adjust the size to suit).
Last year I co-ordinated UC Library’s efforts as part of the 10,000 steps challenge, and really enjoyed it.
I’m looking for a volunteer or volunteers to co-ordinate this year. It’s not much extra work on top of doing the challenge itself. Mostly it involves promoting it to library colleagues and keeping everyone motivated. Everyone last year was pretty self motivated and the library finished at the top of the UC Leaderboard! There is already a weekly walk happening regularly on Thursday’s so we’re one step ahead already.
Please let me know by Friday 21 August if you are keen to co-ordinate.

On Friday a number of library staff attended a NZ Micrographics demonstration via zoom of their ‘online community engagement and collection management software’, Recollect.http://www.micrographics.co.nz/recollect/
This is of relevance to a couple of projects that the library is running, on Digital Presentation systems and Digital Asset Management. There are a number of potential systems out there that could meet some of or all of our needs in this area.
Follow the link to watch the zoom recording:
Nekerangi will be taking leave for the coming weeks so I wanted to let everyone know the arrangements we’re putting in place for supporting his mahi. Gabrielle has kindly agreed to take on Kaitakawaenga Māori duties during this time, including subject support for Aotahi, enquiries relating to the Māori collections at MB as well as teaching support. Gabrielle will be doing this mahi within her existing part time hours, and additional support will be provided by Lisa and Caroline where needed.
Ngā mihi nui

We will be returning MB opening hours to normal from next week (8.30 – 5.00, Monday to Friday). We have our two bookable discussion rooms if students are looking for a space to study for or sit their online exams.
Due to the current restrictions on visitors to campus in level 2, we are not yet open for non-UC visitors, but can provide email and phone support for enquiries.
We are looking forward to being another step closer to normal 🙂
MB Library will be re-opening from Wednesday 20 May with reduced hours of 11.00am – 3.00pm initially.
Our info desk needs to remain open due the nature of our service, and collections, but we will have protective measures in place.
Most of the team will be onsite, but a few people will remain working from home for a while longer. We’re looking forward to moving a big step closer to normal, and I’m looking forward to seeing the team in person.
Loving the photo recreations so I thought I’d join the bandwagon!
Couldn’t wait for the perfect shot as my actor was about to become difficult.
