Wiley InterScience

Our access rights from Synergy to InterScience have not been completely migrated. We are getting a login/password screen when we try to access Blackwell content on Wiley. Wiley has been contacted urgently to fix this but please be aware that there is a bit of a backlog in processing such problems so it may take a bit longer to resolve.

Web of Science

There are problems connecting to full text from Web of Science – you may get a “links service error” message. Thomson Reuters has been contacted and will hopefully resolve the problem asap.

In the meantime, if you use the links button on the first screen of results it gives the error message but if you bring up the full record then use the links button it goes correctly to the Article Linker screen (in IE, that is; Firefox returns a blank screen). If this doesn’t work, there’s always the old fashioned way…

Blackwell Synergy

Blackwell Synergy is now closed and all content (including MySynergy accounts) has been moved to Wiley InterScience. Journal URLs are redirecting to Wiley but they are going to the WIS home page rather than to the journal itself. Users will need to do a search for the journal – it may be a few days before more direct links are put in place.

In the meantime, if you know of a frequently used (formerly) Blackwell journal please let me know and I’ll update the Catalogue link.

Note: From the Journals page, titles are now going directly to the required journal. All Catalogue URLs will be updated by late next week.

Journals page

Early this year proposed changes to the Journals page were detailed on Counterculture (see E-journals portal (Serials Solutions)). These changes were implemented but it has now become apparent that we need to revisit the inclusion of the information in the “Go directly to the database or journal publisher’s website” section.

We have had a number of queries recently from information librarians and academics related to what users can and can not do as far as downloading from databases, and the inclusion of this material in course packs, etc. We have also received queries from other library staff wanting to know what publisher packages have been selected in Serials Solutions with regard to their field of interest.

When the list of publishers was removed from the page the quick links to “View terms of use” for each publisher was no longer displayed. This means that the benefit of having quick and easy access to licencing information has been excluded and people now need to look for a particular publisher’s title to determine what they are allowed to do. How do they know that and do they always know what title they want?

To see what this would add to our current page, have a look at the Jackson Library, Stanford Business School, or University of the Sunshine Coast journals pages. Other NZ library sites, including those with Serials Solutions, are also displaying the publisher links.

Consequently, we would like to reinstate the publisher links to the Journals page. Please let us have your comments.

Wiley/Blackwell

From Wiley-Blackwell Online Content Transition News:

“As of Monday, June 30th 2008, Blackwell journal content—including full-text HTML and PDF versions of articles from current issues, backfiles, and issues published online before print—will be incorporated into Wiley InterScience.”

This means that Blackwell Synergy journal content will not be available after 12 noon Saturday 28 June until migration of content to Wiley is completed by Tuesday 1 July. Wiley InterScience will also be unavailable for a period covering Sunday/Monday 29/30 June.

ARTstor

We have a trial of ARTstor until 24 July.

Please have a look (register for an account to obtain more functionality) and encourage users to provide feedback. Handouts relevant for various disciplines other than Art have been created by ARTstor and you may find it useful to direct your academic contacts to these also.

Find more links to ARTstor content in the right panel of the ARTstor trial information page.

Please let me know of any problems.

Databases Updates

A few upcoming changes to note:

JSTOR has been updated, mainly to fix a few bugs — you can read the details on JSTOR. The Find and Search functionality in downloaded PDFs will be fixed as soon as possible.

EBSCOhost 2.0 has been released in beta and is available on the New Features page in EBSCOhost. EBSCOhost 2.0 will be implemented early next month. Note that there are some limitations in the beta site, as described in EBSCO Support.

Gale Cengage

  • Gale Virtual Reference Library has had older content withdrawn and 17 new resources added
  • Books & Authors replaces What do I read next? on 1 July (WDIRN will continue until 1 September)
  • Literature Resource Center will change to the new “Gold” platform on 1 August

At the end of the month Blackwell Synergy will no longer be available. All content is moving to Wiley InterScience. Online Content Transition News has all the details.

The next generation of Books in Print, BIP 2.0, will be launched later this year. More details and a virtual tour are available on GBIP.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Federated Search

The Federated Search Blog is launching a writing contest.

If you were a contributor (or follower) of the post that generated one of the highest number of comments ever (Adding a Federated Search box to the Library’s homepage), perhaps you could put your thoughts into a winning format.

Note: The Federated Search Blog, along with other relevant blogs, is linked from Team Portals > Collections Services > Cataloguing Resources (left hand panel, under Blogs).

SourceOECD

Ahh ye of little humour, you take away our access! No access

Resources which we should be able to access in SourceOECD now have a frowning face rather than a smiley one. I have followed it up and hopefully smiles will prevail over frowns before the weekend is up.
