Japanese Language Proficiency Test Application Forms

Japanese Language Proficiency Test will on held on Sunday 2 December 2012. Applications are open from Wednesday 1 August until Friday 14 September. Application forms are kept in the cabinet behind the Central Lending Desk. If they are running out, the students can ask for it at Consular Office of Japan located in 12 Peterborough Street, Christchurch.

The story of the Digital Book (video)

A new 10-minute video, ‘The Story of the Digital Book’ by University of California, takes you behind the scenes, following the journey of one book from the shelf to the screen. It shows how the UC Libraries work with partner organisations to scan books and make them findable online. It also demonstrates several ways you can use these newly digital books, and explains how they are preserved for the long term.

The Last Library Is Greater than Google | Peer to Peer Review

The other day a short news item about a conference held at Berkeley on the Google Book Search settlement included a phrase that caught my eye. Geoffrey Nunberg, an adjunct professor at UC Berkeley’s School of Information and a specialist on language and new technologies, said of the Google project, “this is the last library.” [See “Google, ‘The Last Library,’ and Millions of Metadata Mistakes” for more on Nunberg’s comments and the response from Google Book Search engineers.]

The terms of the settlement raise all kinds of issues. Will the Google orphanage unfairly require payments for books that are actually in the public domain? Read more…

EndNote & Library databases

Please note that when you choose to export citations directly to your EndNote Library from a library database and the automatic export does not happen, you need to choose “open with EndNote” option so that the citation(s) can go to your EndNote Library.

Besides, the url exported from a database,e.g. ProQuest to an EndNote Library does not function on off-campus computers.
