New York Public Library documentary in the Film Festival

Join a group of local librarians in viewing a film about New York Public Library

Aoraki LIANZA committee are promoting the film Ex-Libris: The New York Public Library, which is part of the NZIFF festival

Hoyts, Northlands on 11 August, 12 noon.

Discounted tickets at $15 instead of $18.  Seniors price of $11.50 (not discounted).
Email Jenny Owens if you want to join the group.

We will collect the money (must be cash) on the day.  Please be at the theatre by 11.45 am.   If you don’t turn up we will still be expecting to receive the money from you as we will have to pay for your seat.  We look forward to seeing you there.  You don’t need to be a LIANZA member to attend.

Below is information about the film

Directed by legendary documentarian Frederick Wiseman, Ex Libris: The New York Public Library explores multiple facets of the library, not only in midtown Manhattan but also in less frequented neighbourhoods. Wiseman’s approach is as always humane and low-key, with a healthy fixation on the people who fill its spaces and give them meaning. From budget meetings, to enthusiastic archivists and educators, to patient phone operators, to live events with the likes of Patti Smith and Richard Dawkins, the scope of NYPL’s service and its social and cultural value is quietly affirmed through Wiseman’s humble observational practice

You can view the trailer for it here: https://bit.ly/2xSk9OA.  Film duration is 197 min

Warehouse hamper

Kia ora koutou

We are not using a Warehouse hamper anymore in Central or EPS. Please put all items for the Library Warehouse into the MB hamper. MB staff are now shelving these items.

The weekly Allied Pickfords hamper run does not include the Warehouse so they won’t be picked up. The only items to go to the Warehouse now from Central and EPS should be Theses. All other items are now in the other stores, except for the special collections managed by MB.

DPI tip for April 2018

3 tips for using your computer mouse to prevent arm, wrist or shoulder pain.

  1. Gripping your mouse – Hold your mouse lightly with a relaxed grip – there is no need to hold on tight as this tenses your muscles, which can cause DPI. The mouse should glide gently.
  2. Keep your mouse as close as possbile to your keyboard – your arm should be close to your body and not outstretched.
  3. When moving your mouse- keep your wrist straight, don’t twist or bend your wrist.

Quote of the Day

A student came to the EPS desk this afternoon with his assignment in his hand and asked us “Do you have any maple syrup?”
We gave him very puzzled looks, and he repeated again, “Do you have any maple syrup, because this is all waffle” and pointed to his assignment in his hand.

We were dumbfounded and very amused!
