Kia ora koutou

Congratulations to Karri Hartley who has accepted a full time position at Ara as Electronic Resources Librarian.  Karri’s last day at EPS will be Wed 19 July.

We are having a morning tea in EPS on Monday 17 July at 10am to farewell Karri.  All welcome.

Karri will still be staying on in the casual pool so you may see her around from time to time.

DPI Tip July 2017

Micropauses

Our concentration levels drop every now and again, so why not take a short break for 2-3 minutes, then get back to the task at hand with renewed energy and focus.

Get up and walk around, say hi to a colleague, grab a drink of water, stand up and do some stretches, relax those arms and shoulders.

If only we could relax as easily and effortlessly as cats!

There is a staff development session on  Wed 5 July on practicing and sharing knowledge about Skype for Business – transferring calls, instant messaging, sharing desktops.
The session is mainly aimed at Customer Services staff but anyone is welcome to attend.  The event will be held in the level 2 workroom, bring your own headset with you.

New staff member joining EPS team

I’m very pleased to report that Saharu Shoji has been appointed as a fulltime library assistant in EPS Library.

Saharu will start in her new role within the next month, exact date still to be worked out.  I look forward to having Saharu join us over here.

She won’t be completely lost to Central customer services team because she will do a regular weekly shift there.

Sheila Nokes Retirement

Sheila will be retiring from UC Library in June.  Her last day of work is Friday 2 June 2017.  She does not want an official library retirement “do” but we will have an informal drop-in afternoon tea at EPS on Thursday 1 June.

Sheila has been a library assistant for over 25 years, first in the former Physical Sciences Library and then Engineering/EPS Library.  She is known for her knowledge of science journals and bringing in fresh flowers from her garden to brighten up the information desk. She has also looked after our library pot plants for all that time, even coming in over the Christmas closure break to water them every year.

We will certainly miss Sheila at EPS Library and wish her well in her retirement.

Outcome of Shelving Assistant Review

Over the past few months I have been responsible for reviewing the job title, hours, pattern of work and position description of the shelving assistants.  This was part of the Customer Services Staffing and Resources Review.
Below is a short summary of the outcome.

  • Job title change – now called Library Customer Services Assistants (LCSA).  This reflects that their tasks include a lot more than just shelving and are a core part of our team.
  • Changes/tweaks to hours and days of work.  This is to provide more cover Monday to Friday and during peak busy times. Total number of hours worked by staff during Academic year remains the same.
  • Increase of hours during the summer.
  • Increase of hours to support Macmillan Brown Library.
  • Position description now includes working on returns desk and processing items from the hampers.

The vacancy created by Hugh moving to Central Library has been filled fixed term by 2 of the existing team working extra hours for 2017.
