Library Room bookings

Kia ora koutou,

With the demise of the online Library booking service next Monday,  we have been looking at alternatives for booking:

  • Room 224
  • EPS discussion rooms
  • Ātea ako (x3)

MB are happy to leave their discussion rooms on the Time Edit system.

We have created individual Outlook calendars for each room, which seem fit for purpose at this stage.

ELS
Simon, Isabella, Ryan and Dale all have editing rights to Room 224, EPS 101c and the EPS Training Room.
The rest of the ELS team will shortly be sent a calendar invitation to allow read only access to Room 224. Please accept this!
This will allow you to see what’s on in Room 224 and update the whiteboard.
If you need editing rights, please let us know.

Subject Librarians
All of LT&R have bookable access to all of these rooms.

  • Other things:
I have swapped the order of Tahi and Rua so from the main library to the window, the room titles are in numerical order (Tahi, Rua, Toru).
  • Toru is awaiting a bench (to arrive this week) and chairs.
  • Long term, Lydia will look at art for the beautifully painted space opposite.

If you experience problems, please let me know: we have tested this, but if there are issues, we have a backup ready to roll out at a moment’s notice!

ACCT texts

Kia ora koutou,
ACCT211
ACCT212
ACCT312
ACCT624
These courses share the same textbook: two of these papers have open book tests next week.
There are 400 students vying for 9 electronic and 4 paper copies, the latter now hidden around the Library unissued.
I have spoken to Rob Vosslamber from ACIS, who agrees this isn’t ideal and will not happen next year.
He further suggested it had been clearly indicated students purchase their own textbook as it was used across 3 undergrad papers.
He will advise his classes that students cannot rely on Library copies for use during the test.
What can we do?
ELS folk: please keep eagle eyes on the PJH High Demand collection (especially HF) until the end of next week
Everyone: as you move around PJH, please keep an eye out for them and return copies to HD immediately
I can only apologise for this: despite my very clear annual requests, we have had issues with open book tests in the Business School for the last 3 years: let’s hope this is the end of it.

MKTG202 Wine assignment

Kia ora,
There are a lot of questions about this assignment at present.
Thanks for your help!

You can find information to assist students on the Business Subject Guide. Look under the Subject Major tab, and go to Marketing.

The tips are in the centre column, and there are referencing examples at the end of the column: I haven’t removed the middle box as there are other marketing assignments on at present.

Students need to adapt these guidelines depending on their wine type and country.

Please note the earlier access instructions for Passport:
New users must complete Euromonitor account registration upon first accessing the database (the account created will be tied to their Open Athens sign in and logged in to automatically next time they access the database). Terms and conditions need to be opened, not just have the box ticked 🙂

As always, any questions can come to me or Kathryn.

Marketing assignments and Passport

Kia ora koutou,
There are two large marketing assignments under way at present in the Business School.

Students are required to use Ibis, Orbis and Passport databases.

To reference these, have a look at the APA guide under Reports and Government publications, then scroll down to Original Proprietary Database Content.

To add to the fun, there are several points to note with Passport.

New users must complete Euromonitor account registration upon first accessing the database (the account is tied to their Open Athens sign in and logged in to automatically next time they access the database).
This signin does not look like a usual UC one, and Access conditions must be read and accepted: you can’t just tick the box.

There is also an occasional issue with students being able to log in to Passport.
Digistal Services are looking at it but in the meantime, ask students to open any OpenAthens resource first, then they should be able to log into Passport afterwards.
Any OpenAthens redirected resource will do – e.g. https://go.openathens.net/redirector/canterbury.ac.nz?url=https://dl.acm.org/

Once you have an established session with OpenAthens, the problem seems to resolve – it’s only on first login that it occurs).

For other Passport login issues, try swapping browsers and clearing caches.

Kathryn or I are very happy to help if students have problems.

Research Seminar: Hello it’s me….but it’s not!

Kia ora tātou,
Herb de Vries in the School of Business recently presented to staff on his use of avatars and animation in MGMT100 (800 students).

We now have the opportunity to see his engaging presentation too! Blurb below.
All most welcome.

There will be kai, but please bring your own cup.
There will be an Outlook invite for catering purposes.

“Hello it’s me…. but it’s not!”

In the growing online experience delivered at UC, the question is often debated. “How do we effectively engage with this online cohort?” I don’t have the answers but what I’d like to share with you is the use of personal avatars and movement in online lectures.  Does this engage the students or is it just a gimmick that distracts from the learning? I’d like to discuss this question and my experiences with personal avatars and movement in this presentation.
