New APA 6th style in EndNote

APA have released the APA 6th style and this is now available in EndNote. There is a minor problem:

– The new reference list guidelines state that when there are 8 or more authors, the reference should list the first 6 authors and then … before the last author. EndNote APA 6th is adding et al. in the Reference List.

Until LibraryIT are able to make these modification, users will have to manually make this change.

APA style changes – 6th edition

There are a few changes to APA style in the 6th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. The main changes are:

Use the DOI for online journals. If no DOI use the home page URL for the journal rather than the database name. The manual advises that this may necessitate a “quick web search to locate this URL”.

Retrieval dates are no longer necessary for websites unless the material may change over time (e.g. Wikis).

When authors number eight or more, include the first six authors’ names, then insert three dots and add the last author’s name, e.g.
Yoon, P. W., Chen, B., Faucett, A., Clyne, M., Gwinn, M., Lubin, I. M., … Muin, J. (2001) Public health impact of genetic tests at the end of the 20th century. Genetics in Medicine, 3, 405-410.

PDF aloud message

Some courses on Blackboard (e.g. geog 106) have PDFs which display a message “PDF aloud” when opened. When this displays the PDF can’t be printed or closed. I have reported this problem to Gregor Ronald. It is something to do with the way the document has been loaded onto Blackboard. The Loft office advise to open Adobe Reader separately (not in the Web Browser), save the pdf from Blackboard and then open it in Adobe Reader.

Psyc 207 Assignment

I am away until Thursday 23 April. There is a PSYC 207 assignment due at the end of April. If students need help in my absence, below are the topics and suggested searches on PsycINFO.

Set the following limits for all of the topics:
Age: Childhood & School age
Publication type: peer reviewed journal
Methodology: Empirical Study

Bullying is normal and children can cope with it.
Try:
bullying and childhood development
bullying and coping behavior
bullying and emotional responses
bullying and risk factors

Correlational studies can’t help us explain children’s developmental phenomena.I would recommend finding research articles that use correlational analyses and then look at the limitations outlined in the study.

Try:
correlation* and infant development (SU) OR childhood development (SU)
correlation* and test validity (SU) and infant development (SU) OR childhood development (SU)
statistical correlation (SU)
methodology or empirical methods (SU) AND infant development (SU) OR childhood development (SU)

Children don’t change much as they get older

Try:
Childhood development and nature nurture
Childhood development and change (SU)
Childhood development and behavioral genetics
Childhood development and psychosocial development

The student could also limit the search to Longitudinal studies (study done over a period of time to track change). Select Longitudinal study from Methodology window on Advanced Search screen.

Thanks
Kerry

Warehouse Changes

The Central Library Collection Reorganisation Project has resulted in a change to the layout of serials in the Warehouse. Serials Q – Z have been integrated from classified and shelf numbered sequences into one classified sequence. If you would like an explanation of the new arrangement, I will run a brief tour at the Warehouse at 11am on Thursday and Friday this week. Just come along at one of these times and I’ll explain the changes.
