Week of the Geek Props

Next week is Week of the Geek and we need your help!

On Thursday we have a photo booth (or, a gif booth, technically) that students will be able to use to take photos of themselves and their friends. Ideally we would like to have some simple props students can use to make the photos interesting – hats, feather boas and the like. Things that are easy and quick to put on and take off.

If anyone has anything like this that they wouldn’t mind us using, could you please let me (Kiera) know? We’ll only need them from 1-4 on Thursday 15 March, so you can bring them in and have them back on the same day.

Also, if anyone has any board games they’d be interested in playing/letting us use for Wednesday board game day (also running from 1-4) can you please get in touch with Rebecca?

Facebook Fun

Kia ora koutou

I’m sure you all remember our Kardashian post. In our next attempt to reach Facebook fame, and from there, world domination, we’ve decided to try another fun post and we need your help!

A week or so ago we posted a link to Harry Potter and the Portrait of What Looked Like a Large Pile of Ash on Facebook. Students were amused, as were we. (For those not in the know, a couple people fed all the Harry Potter books into a predictive text generator and it wrote a new, short, Harry Potter book).

What we propose to do is record as many of us as we can dramatically reading this text, and then we’ll post it to Facebook.

Interested in participating? Email Kiera or Fiona by Monday 5 March for your chance to become a viral Facebook sensation.

From March 12-16 we’ll be running our second annual Week of the Geek! We’ve got a week of fun activities lined up for students, including LEGO, video games, board games, a photobooth, and puppies! We’ll be need volunteers, so save the date if you think you might be interested!

Library 101

Kia ora koutou

As part of the Extracurricular Information Literacy project, we have been discussing our face to face Library 101 offerings, and whether we should continue offering them. Classes in 2016 averaged 4 attendees, and those in 2017 averaged 2.

Based on the low attendance and the amount of staff time they take to run, it has been decided that we will no longer run face to face Library 101 tutorials. However, we will continue to offer online 15 minute Adobe Connect sessions, which cover a similar range of topics as the Library 101 classes.

To replace these classes, we are working on creating a suite of online, interactive tutorials that students will be able to complete at their leisure. There isn’t an exact timeline yet as to when they will all be completed, but in the interim students can be directed to the Adobe Connect classes, or to their subject librarians for one on one help.

If you have any comments or suggestions, please email me (Kiera) as the project manager.

I love summer

Sometimes people ask me why I left Canada, and from now on I will point them to this picture, which is a screenshot of the current weather in North Bay, Ontario where I lived for four years while I did my undergrad. Check out those feels like temperatures!

(it is not always quite this cold, in fairness but yikes)
