Library Hours – update and link to read relevant documents

Kia ora koutou

its been a little over 2 weeks now since we had a meeting to discuss 2018 Library Hours and plenty has been happening in the background since! If you went to the K drive and read the UCSA report after my previous Counterculture post, you’ll be aware that more than 1750 students responded to the survey, and you will have seen their full text comments. The two UCSA documents are still in the K drive at K:\LIBR-Library\Management\Opening-hours, so if you have not yet had a read, it is worth doing so. There you will also find a document that summarises the discussion from the Thursday 29th June Library meeting and also the revised proposed hours for 2018 .

UCSA tabled their report on the survey for discussion at last Friday’s Academic Board and the recommendations were well received. The draft proposed hours will also be discussed this Friday at Library Committee. Internally, we will continue to work on staffing options for the proposal.

VC’s visit to the Library Next Week

On Wednesday 19th July from 2pm – 3pm the VC is visiting to catch up with Library staff.  His visit will be hosted in Room 210 of Central Library.

We hope that the VC will enjoy looking at the posters that have been created over the past year for use in our own staff fora. If you have a poster that should be displayed (whether you wish to speak to it or not) please give it to me (Lyndsay) by noon on Tuesday 18th. I already have the recent poster from EPS and the recent poster from Education.

If you’d like to assist in preparing for the visit, please let me know today.

Thanks,

Lyndsay

Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori – planning meeting

Kia ora koutou,

soon the University-wide planning team for Te Wiki o Te Reo 2017 will meet, so its time for us to get organised as a Library and think about what we wish to achieve. We can then feed back fully into the wider planning team. All staff are therefore welcome to attend and provide input and ideas on how at each Library and in the online spaces we can make Te Wiki o Te Reo successful. The meeting will be Friday 14th at 2pm in Poutama on Level 3 of Central Library.

If you cannot attend the meeting but have some ideas, suggestions for this year or thoughts about last year’s events, please email them to me (Lyndsay) or tell someone else who is going to the meeting.

The project closure report from the 2016 team is in the K drive at K:\LIBR-Library\Projects\Te-Wiki-o-te-Reo-Maori\2016 if you want to do some background reading.

Meeting to Discuss 2018 Library Hours -Thursday at 9am – all welcome

Kia ora koutou,

Anyone who wishes to contribute to a problem-solving approach determining how best to meet our customers’ needs around the Libraries open hours in 2018 and beyond please come at 9am on Thursday to Room 210 in the Central Library. W e will spend an hour together working to refine our proposal.

Te Paea, the Customer Services team leaders and Jo have prepared a draft discussion proposal for 2018 opening hours as they normally would at this time of year.  As you may be aware, UCSA polled students regarding some of their preferences in relation to library opening hours and tabled their report at the Library Committee meeting last Friday.

The relevant documents are at  K:\LIBR-Library\Management\Opening-hours so please read them before the meeting.

Anyone who can’t make the meeting time please send your comments through to me or pass them on to others who are going. (thanks to Wendy D for reminding me of this and sending comments through already!)

The Library at the University of Mosul

This is a more sobering tale than the lovely pics of Te Wehengarua, but I thought it might be of interest.

I was reading this recent article from the New Yorker about a reporter visiting the destroyed university in Mosul, and it makes particular reference to the complete destruction of the library. The staff, students and donors are reflecting on how to recreate the library, and university, and it is very much about place and print and symbol of spirit…

BookNight reportback.

We had a great time doing our relaxing reading down on level 3 last night – some of us didn’t want to go home! Huge thanks to all involved for organising ideas, display, free giveaway books, lots of marketing and coming along to read.

We were privileged to have Felicity read to us –  with Hairy Maclary and the excitement of all the dogs meeting Scarface Claw, then Slinky Malinki out and about in the neighbourhood. Thanks very much, Felicity. I hope we can have you read to us again.

I experienced a deja vu moment reminding me of listening to another skilled reader, Robert Erwin (many years ago now).

(In related news , Anton and I have been talking about starting  a bedtime story time for students…)

BDS say that there were 45 events and 2,222 people registered as reading across New Zealand last night. There are some good photos uploaded if you like seeing other people reading 🙂
