ARTH Assignments on art work displayed in the library

Mōrena,

There are currently 2x assignments using the art collection on public display underway this week. If you see students who seem to be wandering aimlessly around the library looking at the art – it could be them!

ARTH217 – Kiwi Icons – research and write a catalogue entry on an art work from a building list (Mechanical & Civil Eng, Karl Popper, Business & Law, Central Library, Macmillan Brown Library).

ARTH330 – Medium and Materiality – write a short essay considering an art work on public display in relation to issues of medium and/or materiality. Building list from Central Library, Macmillan Brown Library, EPS Library.

There are 2x art works on L5 of the Central Library that have been listed as part of the assignments. (Whakapapa by Kura Te Waru-Rewiri & Stars, Hearts, Heads and Knives by Tony de Lautour.

Japanese exhibition – Matariki Gallery

The last exhibition to be coordinated by the Library opens this Saturday. A touring show of stunning handcrafted objects from Japan. It has been organized by the Confucius Centre and Art History department who will be using it for teaching and learning.

There will be a small display in the Central Library and a larger exhibition in the Matariki Gallery.

Dr Richard Bullen will be giving a talk on items in the exhibition – dates to be advised.

Art History Day

Tomorrow morning we will be hosting high school tours in both PJH and MB as part of Art History day. The idea is to give interested students a taste of what it would be like to study at UC and the kind of awesome resources we offer. Elizabeth C and I will be hosting groups at Central and Erin and Damian will be hosting groups at MB. This is the fourth year the Art Hist dept has asked the Library to contribute and we always get great feedback.

A Sense of Unease exhibition in the Matariki Gallery

Morena!

We have a new exhibition on show in the Matariki Gallery. The staff at MB have had fun finding weird, creepy and unsettling items hidden away in our collections. Of particular interest to those in PJH – Ronnie van Hout’s self portrait ‘End Doll’ which Coral on more than one occasion described as ‘that creepy Chucky doll’. I’m being a bit provocative here but  I  was just wondering, seeming how it’s out now, perhaps the staff at PJH would like me to return to permanent display on level two once the show is over? Let me know your thoughts!van Hout uc apc 1173 closeup
