Taking Libraries to 2025 – The Future of Libraries

On Friday I will be spending the day in Wellington at The Future of Libraries Summit

The summit is hosted by Te Rôpû Whakahau and LIANZA. It will bring librarians together from many Library sectors to discuss the challenges for Libraries and LIbrarianship. The outcome of the summit is intended to be a cross-sectoral collaborative action plan to take our profession forward.

In preparation I would be very pleased to have your input on the following questions –

What are the key drivers of the profession?

What would a flourishing library sector look like in 2025 if we address these key drivers?

What are we currently doing to address these drivers at the library level, at the sector level, at the whole of profession level?

Where are the gaps?

Who should take responsibility for these gaps?

A padlet is set up here for you to post your ideas

Or come along to a face to face meeting –

Thursday 30th July 2015
3.00 – 4.00 pm
Puaka-James Hight, Room 210

I look forward to a lively discussion.

Kaitakawaenga : Liaison Librarian

On the eve of Te Wiki o te Reo Mâori it is timely to announce that Aurelia’s position has been renamed Kaitakawaenga : Liaison Librarian.

Te Aka Mâori-English Dictionary gives the translation Mediator or Arbitrator for Kaitakawaenga – http://www.maoridictionary.co.nz/search?idiom=&phrase=&proverb=&loan=&keywords=kaitakawaenga&search=

This change has come about as part of the PD&R process. The Position Description for the role has been reviewed and updated to better reflect the work that Aurelia does and the responsibilities of the role. The change of title has been approved by Te Ohu Reo (The UC Mâori Language Reference Group), Library Managers and by HR.

Baby news – Welcome Rhiann Scullin

Just in from Nick –

 Baby Rhiann Scullin

Our baby girl was born on the 26th at 6:12am. She was a big baby at 4.2kg and 58cm long. Both mum and baby are doing well. We have called her Rhiann. Unfortunately she had to spend 2 nights in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit because three hours after birth she started having some breathing problems. She had some fluid on her lungs and they thought she might have an infection although tests showed she didn’t. She was reunited with Jihyun on the third night in the Maternity Ward and both mum and baby came home this afternoon. They are both doing really well now. Rhiann is feeding really well which is great! We love her so much and are super happy and excited to have her at home with us.

Academic Liaison Team – changes in reporting

We’ve made some changes in the Academic Liaison Team.

Liaison Librarians in the Social Sciences and Humanities cluster now report to Sara Roberts and
Liaison Librarians in the Education cluster report to Aurelia Arona.

The other 2 clusters – Science and Engineering and Business and Law continue to report to me (Alison McIntyre)

I am delighted that Sara and Aurelia have agreed to take on higher duties to support the management and leadership of the Academic Liaison team.

Thank you – Patricia’s retirement celebration

Thank you for joining to celebrate Patricia’s retirement on Thursday.

Your contributions funded a lovely bouquet of flowers – thank you.

We were also able to give Patricia a Waterford crystal vase thanks to the generosity of the University in recognition of Patricia’s 32 years of service.

Patricia has emailed – “I’m so delighted to have the vase – it is very splendid and the flowers you gave me look gorgeous in it. I’m enjoying them both so much.”

Thanks again

Library 101

One of the actions in our Library Operational Plan 2015 is to Deliver a Library Skills Induction Programme for undergraduate students.

Ta-da! – Library 101

Library 101 is a Library induction programme for semester one intended to –

Introduce students new to university to the basic Library skills needed for independent research

Support the reading and synthesising of challenging information sources for academic success

Nick Scullin in his new role as Information Literacy Coordinator will work with the Learning and Teaching Support portfolio group in the Liaison team to develop this initiative. I’m posting this message on Nick’s behalf as he is off sick today.

There will be 4 workshops offered in the programme for semester 1.

1. Find and manage course readings – Wednesday 18th March
2. Independent research using the library – Wednesday 25th March

Then after Easter
3. Introduction to journals for science students – Wednesday 6th May
4. Introduction to using art, archives and photos in assignments – Wednesday 13th May

Please encourage students to book online – http://library.canterbury.ac.nz/webapps/public/course.php#library101

All of the workshops will be in Central Library room 210 on Wednesdays 1.00 – 2.00. The workshops are timed to complement the Library’s orientation activities and the Liaison Librarians’ embedded subject specific teaching.

Liaison subject changes

Please note the following changes to Liaison subject responsibilities –

Sport Coaching – Kerry Gilmour
Linguistics – Elizabeth Cooke
Criminal Justice – Sara Roberts and Theresa Buller
Computer Science and Software Engineering – Cuiying Mu
Communication Disorders – Margaret Paterson
Bridging; CUPS; ESOL – Patricia Jordan

These changes have been agreed with the staff involved and notified to the departments. They are intended to redistribute subjects for which Glenn previously had responsibility, to allow handover of Patricia’s subjects while we’ve still got her knowledge in the team and to put a bit more staffing resource into Science and Engineering to cater for growing demands there.

Patricia will continue with Music for this term.
