ULANZ/CTA registration for 2009 has begun today at the Central Library Lending desk. Same procedure as last year except that records are ‘approved’ straight away. A student card with dates proving a 2009-2010 enrolment is ESSENTIAL.

Problem with new ELC student records
The English Language Centre (UCOpportunity) have confirmed today that there is a problem with NEW ELC student records. The problem is preventing the new records from loading onto the Library system.
The reason is that their tech support people (Digital Fusion) had not done the necessary programming for 2009. I am told the problem is being fixed today and that the records should come through tomorrow (Saturday).
I’ll follow up on Monday to make sure everything is in order. Helen Doidge.
Green elephant book sale
Lending staff have had some confusion with books ‘found’ lying around the library that have no library stamps but are known to have come from the Green elephant book sale. We asked Collections to ensure that all donations have a cancelled stamp.
Collections have confirmed that ‘any items that do not have a stamp have originated from sources unknown. They suspect that even other university staff may have added their own books to the table because they have come across ones which have had lecturer names in them… They also thinks that Library staff may have added books as well.’
If Library staff are adding their own books, please get Collections or Lending to add a cancelled stamp so that the book doesn’t end up in Lost Property’ if left around the Library. We’ll just put it back on the sales table.
Differing due dates
A number of alert staff have noticed that openshelf items issued to the same borrower can have different due dates. This is normal at this time of year and will continue to happen over Summer.
The reason is that in Summer the branch opening hours are out of sync e.g. Central remains open 7 days a week, Education is open for 5 days a week. Horizon disregards days that a location is closed when calculating due dates, so an Education book will issue for a longer period than a Central book.
However, if anyone has concerns about the accuracy of the Horizon Calendar setup for any location, please don’t hesitate to ask for it to be checked.

Location of Card Co-ordinator
The Canterbury Card Office will be located in the UCSA Building, Lower Common Room, which is upstairs by Bentley’s Bar, from Wednesday, 7 January until Friday, 20 February 2009.
This is a change from the Science Lecture Block or the Shelley Common Room.
We are advised that the red topped external borrower cards CAN still be made during this period. Only during two weeks (23rd Feb to 6th March) will external borrower cards be unavailable.

Clearance of James Hight lockers by Security
The widely advertised clearance of the lockers on Level 1 of the James Hight Building took place this morning. Two trolley loads of books were brought up by Security to Lending. There were only a few dozen library books from 2 borrowers. All are now checked in and a note placed on the borrower’s record. The rest were personal copies of text books. Tim has put these aside for a couple of weeks & can be claimed by the owners before the end of the year. Remaining texts will then be assessed for addition to the Library’s collection.
Please refer any complaints about the clearance to Security. They have filled 3 wheelie bins with assorted notepads, lecture notes and miscellaneous stuff like tins of baked beans.
