Reclassifying Central DVD collection

Work has begun on reclassifying and relabelling the Central Library DVD/VCD collection. Running numbers are being replaced by a 2-3 letter call number for films and LC classification for documentaries. As each DVD is stripped and relabelled, it is moved out onto shelves at the end of the 3 Day Collection.
Example is Bib 789800, ‘The Blair Witch Project’
Library Catalogue PAC note = ‘DVD. Shelved on Level 2’
Call number = BLA [derived from 1st 3 letters of film title]. DVD is not part of the call number but does appear on the label.
Note that this call number is not yet searchable in Local Call number index. This will be done later.
Restricted Loan DVDs are being reclassified and relabelled separately and will remain behind the desk.

PAC message on CL Dewey items

The CL Dewey items have been moved from Level 4 open shelves into the Level 4 Training Room.
The PAC message reads ‘Ask at Lending Desk, Level 2’. This is so that you can give our borrowers the following advice: Place a request on ‘In Library’ items and they will be picked up in the next IBDS collection and be placed on the CL Hold shelves. See Bib 963076 for an example.
Note that IBDS collections are down to once a day at 2 pm over Summer.

Summer Hours for Extended Hours Supervisors

Both Extended Hours Supervisors will be changing their hours after Show Day.
Angela Berry will begin her new part-time hours on Saturday 15th November. Her normal working week over Summer will be Saturday 12.30-5.30 pm; Monday and Tuesday 10 am – 6 pm.
Sandra Gover will be working a Monday to Friday 8.30 am to 5 pm week over Summer.
Romy Forrer and Fiona Horne will be managing Central Library evening hours (5-9 Monday to Thursday) and Sundays.
If you require assistance from the Casual Team, please continue to ring ext 6198 rather than trying to contact Angela or Sandra personally. Some assistance can be arranged over Summer but only a few of the Casual Team will be available – advance requests are welcome.

English Language Centre students

Students enrolled in English Language Centre (ELC) courses have Canterbury cards that look exactly the same as other UC student cards but there is an underlying difference. All undergraduate records from Jade have 108 days added onto to the student’s course end date. For most undergraduates enrolled for 2 semesters, this means that their library record expires around February of each year and this matches the date printed on their card e.g. 02/09.
ELC student cards also have this kind of date on their Canterbury card, but in their case it represents a POTENTIAL end date rather than an actual end date. Their courses end on a variety of dates throughout the year.
If Horizon is telling you that an ELC student record is expired, it is correct. Ignore the date on the card. Ask the student to pay a visit to the English Language Centre to re-enrol if they want to continue studying. NB The new enrolment details will load overnight and Horizon will be updated the following day.

Giving advice about registering as an external borrower

If you are asked to provide information about joining UC Library as an external borrower, PLEASE always direct the enquirer to the web page Library Services Alumni and External Patrons for the most accurate and up to date information.
Lending Services staff have had two occasions recently where a registration was unable to proceed because the person had not been advised that they must provide photo ID AND proof of a Canterbury address. The person was understandably not impressed.

Empty your pockets

There are 5 keys missing from the Lending Key Cupboard. Some have been gone for over a week. If you have any of the following please return them to the cupboard, or, let me know where they are and why.
Keys 24 & 25 = Help Desk drawers; Key 27 = Info Services and Interloans; Key 31 = L4 Discussion Room; Key 39 Drop Box; Key 53 = L5 Training Room.

A good suggestion

An excellent suggestion has been made for a small change in how Library Public Services staff identify themselves as the authors of Alert or Comment Blocks on Horizon borrower records.
Instead of using your initials, why not use your Username instead?
This would save a bit of head scratching – if you don’t know who it is, do a Horizon search on the usercode. Thank you to seg21 for the idea which I intend to adopt.
