The electrician has fixed the lights on Level 2 but will be doing further work next week on the lighting system. If there are more lighting irregularities over the weekend e.g. lights suddenly going out on specific levels, please note the time and level in the Supervisor Communication Book. This information will be useful for the electrician.

Lights on 2 out electrician called
Lights on the periphery of Level 2 Central Library suddenly went out at around 11.30 am. Lighting controls won’t respond to staff cards. Security notified and they have called the electrician in.

Smoking high school students
A group of High school students (green school uniform) were found yesterday evening in the NE stairwell (closest to Info Services workroom). They were very noisy and a strong smell of cigarette smoke was detected. The students were asked to leave. If these students have been smoking in the stairwell, this is a serious matter.
If any Central Library staff come across these or any other students smoking inside the Library, inform Security immediately.

Canterbury card Error Report
When the Copy Centre is closed and there is a problem with either the Reload Station or Eftpos to Canterbury Card machine which involves student or staff funds, please fill out one of the blue ‘Canterbury Card Error Report’ forms with the details (Name, Student ID) of the person and of the problem.
These forms are kept in the top drawer of the cabinet in front of Lending Desk Hold shelves. The form is passed onto the Copy Centre so that the problem can be resolved.

Door access and lift problems campus wide
Security reports that due to recent programming changes there are a raft of ‘glitches’ relating to door access and lift programming across the campus. They have reported these to ECL and are hoping that the problems will be resolved within next couple of hours. The problems are NOT related to anyone’s personal card access.
ITHelp desk assistance with inactive accounts
Deborah Pearson of IT Helpdesk has advised that their staff can assist students (during the Canterbury Card outage) to re-activate accounts disabled due to lack of funds. This will enable the student to login to their PC, do internet browsing and printing.
During the day, send the student to the Help Desk at ICTS, from 5 pm, this service is available from Amy at Central Library Lending Desk.

Orbital scanner at Reserve CKI
A replacement part for the old scanner/sensitizer unit has not been sourced yet. Since we want to keep CKI at ‘c’ and ‘a’ locations separate, as an alternative, an orbital scanner has been set up at ‘a’ location.
CKI is now a TWO-STEP process for 3 day loans. First scan the barcode, then swipe the item (as usual) to re-sensitize the strip.
Staff rostered to open up CKI should go back to logging in both CKI PCs as usual.

Canterbury Card Services Upgrade
The outage is starting at 4 pm today and going through to Thursday 4th (at the latest).
Since the Library will not have access to Diebold during this period, we will have to override fine blocks (of whatever size or age) during the outage. Please, however, make it clear to the borrowers WHY we are doing this and that the fines have not gone away but will have to be paid later.
The same applies to persons with lost books EXCEPT when there is a Registry invoice involved – I’m advised that the Cashiers will be able to process payments still.
Lending cannot process any Request for Remote Payment either. We will collect the forms for processing on Friday 5th September and place an Alert Block on each borrower record to advise that payment will be delayed and fines overridden.

ESOL readers
English Language Centre have decided that they would like to have the ESOL readers available to students as ordinary open shelf loans rather than 3 day loans with steep overdue fines. We are delighted to be able to accommodate this change, however it does mean temporary inconvenience for the students whilst the items are being taken out of the 3 day loan collection and moved to the PE area of Level 4. Some weeding is being done in the PE area as well.
Processing started today and should be finished by the end of the week.
