“…Libraries have a lot to promote and sell. Besides our myriad of programs and services, we need to influence a lot of other things in our community – like fundraising goals, budgets and bonds, local awareness of our role in the economy, education, and community success. Can we use our library communications to generate behavioral change? Better educated citizens, higher performing students, better small business success, large industry, and tourism? Can we set our goals high? Can we measure and prove success?…”
The net is abuzz with the news that two US retailers have sent out some copies of the latest Harry Potter book ahead of the deadline (11am, 21st July, NZ Time) and are going to get the pants sued off of them…
Here’s a news story on it which doesn’t give any plot etc away though for Potter fans out there you may want to avoid the usual haunts for 24 hours in case the news media are tempted to spill the dirt because some papers (in the UK, US) have already published full reviews and including key plot twists and endings…
(seen on LISnews.com) Educause has come out with another of their “7 things” publications, this one on Wikipedia. It’s short and sweet, presenting a particular scenario about a student using Wikipedia...and the 7 things you should know. It’s not pollyannaish, nor hysterical. Kind of a nice counterpoint to Michael Gorman’s screed over on Britannica
The password printing station at EDU seems to have been out of order for the past week or so – anyone getting their pin wrong gets a big WRONG sign but if they get it right they were just getting a computer error message. I’ve restarted the computer and it now accepts the right pin but instead of printing the password out it saves a document in the MY DOCUMENTS folder of the computer and displays that document on screen about 2 mins later. Recommend that if you’re helping students use it that you wait a minute or two after PIN entry to make sure that their details aren’t left up on screen. Have contacted Library IT. -glen

LIANZA has started doing regular polls on it’s website and the ongoing results are instantly shown but will also be summarised in Library Life each month. The first poll is on web 2.0, something that people reading this have some contact with… 🙂
The Self-issue machine has reverted to having a screensaver come up if not used for more than a few minutes which is off-putting to potential patrons. Library IT are on to it.
As part of the NZEC rejig, there are some non Education NZEC materials stored in the workroom beside the mailboxes. Status on Horizon is T: In Process.
The number will grow, but they are in Dewey order so should be easy to find your way around should anyone require these items. KA 12/5
Yes, plunge taken – the Education team are trialling a blog which we are calling “Education News.” This is intended to be a mixture of sectoral, college and Library news, a way of making the library a focal point for the community. We’ve avoided use of the word ‘blog’ in order not to scare the punters off, but we’ll see how it goes…
