Over the next couple of months the LIANZA Digital Library Special Interest Group (DigLibSig) is holding webinar series on a number of topics of interest to the library and information sectors as a whole. The format of each webinar is 2-3 presentations followed by the opportunity to ask questions and to share your own experiences (both good and bad).

The Webinar Series is using the Zoom platform. Connection details will be published prior to each webinar. No RSVP is required but participants should ensure that they are able to connect prior to the session

A to Z list changes, and Summon interface changes

A to Z list of Journals

The A to Z list screen has been updated by Proquest and we will turn it on at some stage soon. It has a clearer layout and provides more information about individual titles. It also offers the ability to select a title and to then do a Summon search within that title. You can have a look at the preview by using a slightly convoluted process:

Go to the current A-Z journals page:  http://gr2tq4rz9x.search.serialssolutions.com and do any search (e.g. go to Browse journals by title and click on  ‘A’). Go to your browser’s address window and navigate to the end of the URL (which may be hidden in some browsers). Add  &newEJP=true  to the end of the URL, then press enter. You will then be seeeing the new interface.

Summon (Multisearch)

This will change on the 25th of August. The changes are mainly cosmetic with new fonts, icon and layout changes. An example is the advanced search gear wheel will be changed to a text link ‘Advanced’. You can see a document listing the changes on the Proquest site.

Horizon reports available again

On Camelot, you will now be asked to log in when you run an Horizon report. If your browser remains open, you shouldn’t have to log in for subsequent reports.

I know this is an inconvenience, but I’m not sure there will be a short-term way around it. I’m meeting the ITS Security Consultant next week to discuss this and related issues.

Eventually, when we are using the University’s Web Content system, our public-facing and private-facing material will be completely separated and issues such as this will be less likely to arrive.

Horizon reports on Camelot unavailable

At the moment you will be unable to run any of the Horizon reports on Camelot. The area on our WebServer from which these reports run, has been identified as a security risk. Unfortunately the security measures put in place, seem to have stopped access altogether.

Work is still going on in ITS so hopefully we’ll get access before it affects our work too badly. It may be necessary to put in place an authentication step whereby you need to log in.

In the meantime, if there is Horizon information you need urgently, let eServices know – we may be able to get it for you.

Not yet on Office 2013? Time to take the jump

If you are still using Office 2010, it would be a good idea to upgrade to Office 2013 now.  We recommend it as something to do before going home for the night so your PC can toil away and restart as needed.

I have updated the procedure on Camelot to take account of the new Software Center that ITS are using to provide software.

There are two reasons why this has become more important. The first is that if you log on to another PC with a different version of Office, you may have problems with your email. The second is to do with telephones. The University is moving to computer-controlled phones (as the old Switchboard cannot be repaired if it breaks) – using technology called Skype for Business. This works best with Office 2013.

Give eServices a call if you have any questions.

Changes to the way we install standard software

ITS makes available a lot of software that is not installed on our machines by default e.g. Chrome, FileZilla, CoralDraw etc.

In the past we have installed this by using Control Panel and the various Add/Remove software installation links. This is changing. By July 9th the old ways will not work. Instead your machine will have new software called Software Center – you’ll see it if you click on ‘Start’ then ‘All Programs’.

It is easier to use and lets you install more than one program at once. It will also provide clearer options for those times when ITS send out a large number of patches that can potentially slow your machine for ages.

If you are interested in the details have a look at this guide prepared by ITS.
