Stuff titles to be restricted on PressReader

From the 1st November, Stuff titles will not be available to download and read offline – they will remain available via the PressReader web site.

Details from PressReader follow:

Notice of Change to Stuff Ltd. Titles on PressReader

Changes are coming in the digital distribution of content provided by Stuff Ltd, “Stuff”, in New Zealand libraries. Starting on November 1st 2019, Stuff content will no longer be available to users through the PressReader app across all platforms.

However, PressReader has worked with Stuff to ensure that patrons can continue to access Stuff titles throughout UC Library.

Stuff content is fully accessible to patrons through the PressReader website (www.pressreader.com). As long as patrons are authenticated, they can access Stuff titles on both library and personal computers.

Patrons can get access by authenticating in a few different ways:

  • Connecting to the Wi-Fi HotSpot within the library
  • Logging in to the library website.

This change reflects the publisher’s wish to maintain ownership of their titles while keeping them freely available to library patrons.

Below is a list of the Stuff titles that are affected:

Sunday Star Times

Sunday News

Southland Times (Weekday & Weekend Editions)

Waikato Times (Weekday & Weekend Editions)

Dominion Post (Weekday & Weekend Editions)

The Press (Weekday & Weekend Editions)

Nelson Mail (Weekday & Weekend Editions)

Timaru Herald (Weekday & Weekend Editions)

Manawatu Standard (Weekday & Weekend Editions)

Taranaki Daily News (Weekday & Weekend Editions)

Marlborough Express

TV Guide

NZ House and Garden

NZ Gardener

We apologise for any inconvenience. The PressReader team is always working hard to bring libraries and their patron’s access to the world’s most premium, trusted titles – and expect to launch many more in the coming months.

ASHA journals causing linking problems

We are seeing intermittent, and inconsistent behaviour with links through to the various ASHA journals e.g. :

There is no problem connecting to them directly – the problem is with linking from Summon. The reason for the problem is unclear but seems related to a move to a more secure format by ASHA.

We have asked Proquest to look into the linking, but in the meantime if you encounter students having problems please get them to go directly to the journal (via the Catalogue) and to search or browse from there.

Students with macs – forthcoming update problems

I’m copying this from ITS for any of you who may work with students with Macs. In essence, ITS are suggesting students who update their Macs to a new operating system soon to be released, may have problems. The post follows:

The new macOS Catalina is due for release in the next few weeks. IT Services are strongly advising users not to upgrade at this stage, as this release only allows 64-bit applications to run and users may be caught out if they rely on legacy 32-bit applications for their work. The Internet Enabler application is an example of a 32-bit app that will not run on Catalina.

Investigation is underway to determine what can be done to resolve the Internet Enabler incompatibility. Other applications will rely on the vendor updating or finding an alternative. If you have further questions regarding the use of macOS Catalina at UC, please contact Bruce Penno in the first instance. We will provide another update to confirm once we are able to endorse the use of macOS Catalina at UC.

Software updates this weekend

Another round of security patches this weekend. ITS are recommending that before leaving on Friday night you open Software Centre, select Updates and start them installing. Log out but leave your machine running. This will save time on Monday.

Customer services staff may find that Dayend doesn’t run. Check the logs and if necessary run by hand before doing notices.

The original ITS message:

Updates will install automatically on Friday 30 August  @ 10pm and a restart will be enforced during the update process.

In order to ensure Windows computers patch smoothly, we are recommending staff and postgraduates start installing updates and log out of their computers when they finish work for the week. If a computer is off or in sleep mode overnight, updates will be installed the next time the computer is powered on.

Latest Mac OS will require EndNote to be fully up-to-date

This note from Clarivate:

As you may be aware, Apple will be releasing macOS 10.15 Catalina this fall (i.e. our spring). Apple has made the decision to drop all 32-bit application support with this release, which will impact EndNote.

EndNote X9 for macOS will be extensively updated for compatibility prior to the launch of Catalina. If you already have EndNote X9, please install all updates as they become available to avoid interruption in your workflow.

If you are running EndNote X8 or earlier, we recommend upgrading to EndNote X9 as based on early information from Apple, your current version will not work with macOS Catalina. Alternately, you may keep working on your current macOS version.

For more details, please visit https://support.clarivate.com/Endnote/s/article/EndNote-for-Mac-macOS-Catalina-Compatibility.

PC security updates this weekend

ITS are pushing out security updates tonight (26th July). If your computer is running, it will restart – logged in or not.

There are quite a few updates – if you want to save time when you come in on Monday (or Saturday or Sunday for that matter) ITS recommend:

In order to ensure Windows computers patch smoothly, we are recommending staff and postgraduates start installing updates and log out of their computers when they finish work on Friday. If a computer is off or in sleep mode overnight, updates will be installed the next time the computer is powered on.

To start the installation, open Software Center (should be on your start menu), choose ‘Updates” on the left-hand bar,  then ‘Install All’ on the top right.

You can then log-out

Problems with two Alexander Street videos

The two videos are:

Counseling and Therapy in Video and Ethnographic Video Online

Alexander Street have recently updated their software and hosting platforms. This software does not work with older versions of the Edge and Firefox browsers. Most of our borrowers should be fine on their home computers in this day of automatic updates, but on-campus we are running older versions. Use Chrome if using these two videos.

Alexander Street have had complaints from us and University of Queensland that I know of – and I suspect there will have been plenty from North American Libraries as well. Hopefully they’ll tweak the software to support slightly older browsers but no word on that yet.

ITS Website and Status Page

A note from ITS :

We have revamped our IT Services website, and introduced Statuspage to keep you notified about IT service outages and maintenance activities.

Some of the Statuspage features:

  • Subscribe via email and/or cellphone – either to all system updates, or to only major outages as they occur
  • Visual status indicators available on the new IT Services webpage – easily see when all systems are “green” , or not
  • Advance notice of scheduled maintenance activities and changes
  • History and details of previous outages and maintenance activities

Check out the new IT Service website here, and click on the Status indicator to view the latest updates & subscribe!

Emerald journals – some problems

Last week Emerald moved its journal content to a new platform. Since then many libraries have reported problems authenticating and getting full text.

Emerald have acknowledged there are problems and have a message to that effect along the top of their web pages. Some people have no problem so it is worth trying, but you may well get some reports of problems. At this stage, no indication of how long this will take to fix.
