Emerald URLs changing

From today Emerald have changed platforms and their URLs have changed format – what used to be https://www.emeraldinsight.com is now https://www.emerald.com/insight.

It will be awhile before all of our records get updated URLs but Emerald are redirecting from old to new, and from the wee bit of testng I’ve done this seems to be working OK.

Let us know if you do come across any Emerald connection problems.

Thanks, Peter K

ScienceDirect problems

Over the last week Elsevier have had a number of problems relating to ScienceDirect. Earlier this week you couldn’t download PDFs. That was fixed. Other problems (which haven’t happened here) have also been reported.

Now you may see an error message when you attempt to connect to an article via Multisearch or Google Full text links – if you have a doi link with Ezproxy in front e.g.

http://ezproxy.canterbury.ac.nz/login?url=https://doi.org/10.1016/j.energy.2019.04.120

you can remove the ezproxy part (if on campus) and the link will work:

https://doi.org/10.1016/j.energy.2019.04.120

This won’t help off campus. The typical error message looks like this:

I’ve reported this.

Exchange servers updates – you may get a pop-up message

From ITS:

As part of preparatory work for the Exchange Online Migration project ITS will be moving the Exchange Autodiscover service from the legacy Exchange 2010 servers to new Exchange 2016 servers. Some people may get the pop-up shown below, if so just check the “Don’t ask me about this website again” box and click Allow.

Although not mentioned in this message, my understanding is this will occur after 9.15 am Friday 21st June

SharePoint unavailable briefly around noon on Thursday

SharePoint will be unavailable for a short time around 12.15 pm on Thursday. This is part of an ongoing process of moving content from the older SharePoint 2010 site.

It is recommended that you stay out of your UCShare sites from 12.10 to 12.20, but if you are only looking at content then you most likely won’t notice any interruptions. However, don’t do any editing over that period.

Horizon upgrade 9th April

On  the morning of Tuesday 9th April we expect to do an Horizon upgrade. The main purpose of the upgrade is to fix the problem that causes Horizon to freeze regularly. However, the upgrade does also offer the option of automatic renewals.

I’ll provide more information later – but we will try to minimize the downtime. All going well, the SelfCheck machines should be working before the Library opens, but staff access to Horizon may be delayed a little – we just have some checks to do first.

New UC App with links to library among other things

Some of you may have heard rumours of a new campus app. This uses  a commercial platform from Ex Libris called CampusM.  While there has not yet been any publicity, there is a possibility it could be released next week.

There will be a library link – but this will just mimic what is available on the web site. While ITS have put a lot of work into trying to make it work directly for library functions such as renewals, requests, etc. that work has, at yet, been unsuccessful so for the library side of things our students will not be seeing anything new. This may change in a future, phase 2, release.

Once it is released any support calls should be directed to ITS.

At the moment the app is likely to provide links to the following services:

  • LEARN
  • Timetable
  • Email
  • Maps
  • Support
  • Library
  • Notices
  • Emergency
  • RecCentre time table
  • Security

EndNote and Google Scholar imports

Some time ago Alison J noticed a problem with EndNote X9 and Google Scholar imports. Journal names were appearing in the author field. This was a bit confusing, because it depended on how you did the import.

If the Google Scholar reference is saved to your PC, and you use the EndNote File Import option, you can select your filter. Selecting the Google Scholar filter works.

But if you rely on direct import, there is no option to select a filter and the default EndNote-Import filter is used. This was causing the fault. Clarivate confirmed with Alison that their default filter was the problem and we now have an updated version  (a copy is in N:\EndNote\Filters).

Students will be able to use this to over-write the faulty version and I will put instructions on the wiki. UC Staff will not have permission to do this and I’ll see if ITS can help. In the meantime, if any of you do want the updated file on you machine, let me know your computer number and I’ll arrange the update.

Camelot being upgraded Thursday morning

ITS are upgrading the Wiki on Thursday morning (13th Dec) between 7.00 am and 9.00 am. This means that for some of this time, Camelot will be down. In the past these upgrades have not meant a lot of down-time.

The Horizon reports are independent of Camelot – but we use Camelot to find them so if there are reports you really need during this time let me know – I can give you the links to run them from an email. However, I suspect if you can’t connect, you won’t need to wait long until you can.
