I’d be happy to discuss any issues of interest, either in person, in discussion groups, or if there is interest I can do a presentation sometime in the new year.
ITS will be upgrading our Ezproxy system tomorrow at 9 am. This will mean that links to our databases, ebooks and ejournals will fail. If you need to get in during that time, you can remove the ezproxy link from the start of urls to connect on campus.
However, although ITS have allowed 60 minutes for this, previous upgrades have caused an outage of less than 5 minutes and I suspect the same will be true for this upgrade. So unless access is urgent, you might just want to wait and try again in a couple of minutes.
Some of you will be aware that some ScienceDirect ebooks do not load properly. Instead of the content, users see:
Table of contents ! There was a problem loading this content. Please refresh this page or try again later.
While initially reported in New Zealand we now have libraries in California reporting the same problem so it is an Elsevier Issue and hopefully will be resolved fairly soon. However, no timeframes yet.
There is a message appearing when people are trying to login to their interloans account. Messages vary according to the browser being used. The message is something along these lines: ‘Your connection is not secure’ or ‘This site is not secure’.
It is safe for them to click on the ‘Advanced’ option offered which lets them continue to the site.
This has happened once before in July. We have contacted OCLC (the interloans vendors) and hopefully will get a quick resolution.
There are problems with emails this morning. This note from ITS:
We are experiencing issues with receiving external email. Emails are bouncing back to the sender with the error “550 5.1.1 unknown or illegal user”. Our IT engineers are currently investigating this and we will provide an update in an hour.
Unfortunately it is wider than this – all non-outlook emails are affected. This includes the normal lending notices sent out each morning. Hopefully we can resend these when things are fixed, but be aware of this problem if students later complain about not receiving a holds or overdue notification.
The server that controls the way our RFID devices connect to Horizon is being replaced by a newer server. Over the last month we have moved most RFID systems to the new server and this does not seem to have caused any problems.
Indeed, we may see some advantages e.g. emailed paper-out alerts.
However, we have one final change to make and it is a biggie – we will be changing that this afternoon. if it goes well, you shouldn’t notice. If it goes badly you may find RFID things break. We will be testing as soon as we make the change, but if you notice anything unusual please let us know.
John and Dave L have reworked the APA 6th style. This is now the current style on our N:\ drive – the old one is still available so if there are students wanting to stay with that, it is now called APA 6th – old.ens.
Students or staff using their own computers can (if they wish) get the newer style by downloading the Styles folder from the EndNote Guide:
