A while back now, ICTS set up a new print service for all our staff printers on one of their print servers. At that time we asked library staff to install the new print queues on their pc’s, and Lin and myself have also been making this change on the various pc’s we have encountered since then as we have needed to. During the time since that change, both the new print service and the old one, have been running side by side, and both services have been available and working.
Last week, our old print server was decommissioned. This ment that anyone who was still using the old print service stopped being able to print. We have fixed up most of the cases where this has occurred. However, some staff installed the new printers back when they became available, but did not delete the old ones.
These disconnected printers cause long delays, when a staff member activates a print function on their computer. The system first tries to determine what printers are available for use, and will not move on to the next step in the process, until it has tried repeatedly to find these printers which no longer exist, and finally times out after about 30sec’s to a minute.
So if you are having difficulties or delays with printing at the moment, the first thing to check is if you have any printers with the term “cantwl1” in their names. If so, delete them, and if necessary re-install the new version of that printer. The new printer of the same name should be on “cantwp.”
If you have any difficulty with these steps, or are not sure how to check your printers, please contact Library IT.
