It is with great pleasure that we announce that there are two ‘new’ members joining the CS team.
They are Catherine Pope from Macmillan Brown and Opeta Ifopo who has worked in Libraries in Samoa. They both bring a great amount of knowledge and skills to the CS team and are seconded for the year, helping us to backfill for Juliet’s and Caroline’s positions.
You will all know Catherine and will get a chance to meet Opeta (or Peta as she likes to be known) within the coming weeks ahead.
I’m sure you will all join us to manaaki them into the CS team and the wider UC Library whānui.
for those of you who wish to, I’m putting together a hamper to take over to Security tomorrow (Thursday). This is to say thank you to them all for their support and especially to Craig.
Craig was the security guard that placed himself in the centre of the quad on Friday and tried to make sure everyone was safe in the Library/Matariki. He stood out side the entire time ushering students/staff and trying to reassure people, while still knowing that an unknown threat existed.
He stayed out there, in the rain and as a first line of defence, without any protection for the entire time. I know it was his job, but to me he was an absolute hero on that day (as Jane and I manned the outside front doors). Please feel free to sign a card for them too which I will be taking around the PJH building today.
For those who might remember, Jean worked as a Library Assistant at the Education Library. She popped in to the Central Library today to say goodbye as she is off to Japan to work as a Professor at Sonoda Gakuen Women’s University for the next 2 years. We wish her the best of luck and will no doubt see her as she will be part of the team who makes the round trip to Canterbury with Sonoda twice a year.
Student Care have begun their move over to Forestry today and will be out of the building fully in the next few days. They have placed up signs both at the Student Care offices and around PJH.
They will still be coming over to help direct students to Forestry if needed and if there is any questions about the move or transition period Craig Forman is the person to talk to.
This is a call for EOI’s to be part of a team putting together a Library Customer Satisfaction Survey. This will help to inform the environment, services and engagement initiatives and practices that support student success and retention.
If you would like to be part of this group, please get in touch.
this years Orientation theme is focused on student wellness, promoting our 3 library locations and manaakitanga – everybody is welcome. The O team have been busy putting together a number of fun prizes and activities that support our theme. These include –
Postcards – there were 7 new postcards created that highlight the Library’s collection as well as one that showcases our Armson Collins Architectural drawings being inscribed into UNESCO.
Library Fortunes – a light hearted take on something similar that was run last year. What will your library fortune be?
O Day Stall – We will be having a Library Stall in the Undercroft at the Information Hub again this year, promoting the Library and our Social media platforms and giving away some goodies. Be sure to stop by and say hello or feel free to hang out and show students your friendly faces. We also have collateral over at the Welcome Centre (Matariki).
Calming cards – these were created to give students some fun and relaxing ways to distress. From taking a walk, through to chair yoga and popping bubble wrap.
Study Buddies – these were a way to give students something that they could keep that could ‘grow with them’ during their time at UC. We did choose mostly succulents, cacti and other hardie plants as well!
Manaakitanga bags – these are lollie bags that are available at all 3 libraries for students until they are gone.
Facebook competition – we are running 3 different competitions on facebook during these two weeks for people to go in the draw to win tote bags filled with all sorts of goodie s.
The City Mission has now collected all of the cans for our annual ‘Can your fines’ promotion. In the end there was 367 cans collected, resulting in $1,835 dollars worth of fines being waived!
Have you ever wanted to be part of the team that helps put together ideas, events and materials to welcome our students at the start of each year?
This is the call out for staff who want to be part of the Library O-Day 2019 team to register their interest. Please contact me directly if this sounds like you.
